My sister Mary May Newman is quoted in this article. Her point (taken somewhat out of context) is that a defibrillator is typically used when someone is clinically BUT NOT YET BIOLOGICALLY dead. Therefore the patient's death probably cannot be attributed to either the attempt to defibrillate or the fire allegedly caused by the defibrillator. My sister's National Center For Early Defibrillation is spearheading the effort at national defibrillation education and the widespread placement of AED's (Automated Exernal Defibrillators) in places of public assembly such as airports and stadiums, and of course, in the vehicles of first responders such as Police, Fire, and EMT.

A possible explanation is that the patient, like many people with cardiac problems, was wearing a nitroglycerin patch-and an AED pad applied over one will make it explode.
