Just curious. In the spirit of the thread regarding energy bills, why don’t we take a quick survey.
Fill out this questionnaire:
1. Gas, oil or electric
2. Steam, hot water, forced air
3. Brand/model of boiler
4. Date installed (approx.)
5. Type of thermostat
6. Typical temp. setting(s)
7. Typical service intervals
8. Carbon monoxide detector?
9. Last chimney cleaning
10. Overall comfort in the home
11. Supplemental heat? (fireplace, electric radiator)
On domestic hot water:
12. Gas, oil, electric, indirect, tankless coil, tankless wall-hung
13. Brand/model of water heating device
14. Date installed (approx.)
15. Typical usage. (2 adults: showers 7-8am, 1 baby: bath noon, etc.)
Either appliance:
16. My last service call involved cleaning/repairing/replacing….
17. I’m (unhappy/reasonably happy/quite happy) with my system and (would/not) like to know what my options are to improve or change it.
18. My energy bill....

I don't know about this "quick survey" but I'll try:

1. Gas
2. Steam/top two floors, hot water/first floor,
3. Weil-Maclean
4. Winter 2002/3
5. not variable
6. 66-67
7. Once a year
8. yes
9. October
10. good except when outside in single digits(first floor baseboards can't keep up)
11. tiny bit in am only because of the insane poeple who like to put freezing cold ceramic tiles on bathroom floors
On domestic hot water:
12. Gas
13. unknown
14. Before my time (probably 10 years old)
15. two adults/shower daily, periodic college student with long showers
Either appliance:
16. My last service call involved: accidental turning off of the master switch, he just turned it back on.
17. Except as mentioned above I think the system works pretty well. I think I could use some insulation on the first floor and dare I say new storm windows.
18. My gas bill was about $300 for Dec/Jan 15. That's about as high as it gets. We were paying more for oil but have to consider that the new furnace is much more efficient. R

Ok -- I'm game

1. Gas
2. Hot water
3. Hydrotherm hc 165 (model #??)
4. 28 years
5. 3 zones, setback (lux)
6. 55 day, 55 night, 65 evening in living areas
55 day, 62 night, 65 evening in sleeping areas
7. 3 years ago last time
8. you bet = 2! Carbon monoxide detector?
9. (ummm, don't know) Last chimney cleaning
10. decent, with a sweater Overall comfort in the home
11. fireplace, hardly used Supplemental heat?

On domestic hot water:
12. Gas
13. Don't know Brand/model of water heating device, its 50 gallons
14. 7 years Date installed (approx.)
15. adult, with teen girl who takes extended (hah!) very hot showers lasting WAY too long! also 8 year old boy, who enjoys baths in a soaking tub

Either appliance:
16. boiler -- had some valves and expansion tank replaced 3 years ago ($290) -- previous owner did little. no service since
17. Love hot water heat, previously only forced air. I think the valves for 1 zone are no longer working -- but I have a bizarre 20 volt system, and it appears its almost impossible to find new ones ("ElectroZone")
18. $300 in a good month, $500 in super cold ones. house is about 3500 sq feet.

When I moved in added more attic insulation above the 3 upstairs bedrooms. And replaced a lot of insulation in the crawl space. But I'm sure more could be done, but the rest of the attic (which is above the major living areas, 2 bedrooms) has a finished floor.

MP --

What will you do with this survey data? Perhaps summarize the results for us with charts and graphs?

1. Gas
2. Steam
3. Weil-McClain installed by Gateway (so I think you know who I am)
4. Oct 03
5. Lux 1500
6. 64-68
7. Annual -- projected.
8. 2nd & 3rd floors only
9. unknown
10. slightly cool on 1st floor; warmer on 2nd (can close doors)
11. none; can't use fireplace; space heaters won't work downstairs (rooms too large)

On domestic hot water:
12. Gas
13. AO Smith
14. 1994
15. Typical usage. 2 adults, 2 showers/day, AM, 6 loads of laundry/wk

Either appliance:
16. My last service call involved: skimming the boiler and installing a new sewer clean-out plug
17. I’m reasonably happy with my system but would like to know what my options are to improve or change it -- especially the knocking in the steam pipes, and uneven heating btwn 1st & 2nd floors.
18. My energy bill.... seems too high given a new boiler and recently insulated steam pipes. $300-$400/mo.

Let's just wait for a few more people to respond.
Peteglider volunteered his sq. footage.
I probably should have included that question.

So far, what I do find interesting is the variation in equipment, systems and thermostat settings and the constancy of energy usage.

I was called in my gas reading two days ago for the Jan/Feb bill, and it was only 422 therms.
