I was wondering, does anyone else find it almost dangerous attempting to drive West on South Orange Avenue near 319 South Orange Ave.?(Between Fielding Court & Park Place) This one block section of the road seems to attract some of the most inconsiderate drivers in town.(Even more than the area around Block Buster.) People are constantly double parking, parking in posted no parking zones, and running into one of the stores in this building, not to mention the vast ammount of young people who seem to enjoy just hanging out infront of the building. I understand that Village Pizza, Cluck "U", & No.1 Chinese, are basically fast food and are pretty much take out only shops; but people need to be considerate of others. What I do find funny though is the fact that the Hair Solon seems to stay open later than the rest of the business in this building. Out of curiosity, does South Orange have an ordinance that regulates the hours that a business can operate? |

Most businesses must close by 11 PM. |

the hair salon is typically open to well past 1 am on some occasions...However, It isn't often...The hours seem to stray. Could the Township designate a space or three in front of 319 South Orange Avenue 15 minute parking during business hours. This would free up parking for the business and force individuals who park for school to not force people eating at the businesses to park illegally. |

I completely agree about the crazy parking around that little block of stores; I live near there (and am a customer there, too). Making the turn onto Fairview is a challenge, given the cars blocking the corners, careless pedestrians, inadequate street lighting... And last night, for example, at about 4am, a noisy crowd gathered outside the stores. Don't know if a party was breaking up or what, but it was very annoying. And this is a pretty common occurrence. The police respond quickly if you call them, but it was too cold to get out of bed... |

When I pick up my monthly fix of wings at Cluck-U (thermo-nuclear) I park around the corner by the park. (Also: I think I've uncovered their wing sauce recipe). |

so, Dave, are you making the wings for Super Bowl Sunday? (maybe it's better if I don't know what's in 'em!) |

On my way home from work I noticed that The hair salon at 319 South Orange Avenue was occupied extremely late in the evening or early in the morning, however you want to put it. I am unsure if they were open. But several people were inside and the lights and TV on and people in the chair. It was about 330 am Friday night. What gives with this???? Also, why do some businesses such as Gallery 61, El Greco, Tung Tin, and Pirate Pizza stay open well past midnight till 3am on some nights. Does the Village regulate business closure times as they do taverns and liquor establishments??? |

I'm happy that El Greco and Tung Tin are open late. Actually I wish there were more places to get something after 10:00 around here, like a 24 hour diner |

Maplewood is your only option...24 hour diner would probably do good in S.O. with the University students and very little else in the area. |

I believe that we have some law on the books in South Orange prohibiting 24 hour stores/diners. NCJ aka LibraryLady On a coffee break..or something like it.

That whole corner is a problem. The barber shop and the liqour store are the cause of an awful lot of late night loitering, especially in the summertime. The corner looks seedy, looks like it was transplanted from the worst part of Newark. I don't understand why the trustess aren't doing something about this eyesore. And I don't think that it is a coincidence that there was also a robbery right around the corner form there on Warren Place about a month ago. |

chocoholic: Give me a suggestion that will improve the corner and I will bring it to the full board. We have discussed and I have yet to hear one idea that would solve the problem. All the stores there are operating legally and all have not been cited for any violations that would cause the village to shut down a store. Do you think the village should spend money and fix up the stores for the landlords?

Fixing up the stores will not help the situation because the same young, hoodlum looking people will be hanging around there. I think that the police should be stopping by there very often. People will stop hanging out there, and the store woners will be forced to close or do something to attract a different clientele. That corner is a place where a terrible, media garnering incident is bound to occur. It doesn't matter if nothing has happened yet. There was a robbery by gunpoint at the liqour stor, for pete's sake. I think pre-emptive action would be best for the town and its citizens , as well as the real estate values. If there is an assualt or God forbid, a murder there, I don't think that would be good for South Orange in any way. |

Those stores are not the problem, there have been muggings all along south orange ave. in the past few years. Car thefts have also been occurring all over the town and neighboring towns. I don't think three take-out places, a barber shop and a liquor store are bringing crime onto our neighborhood. I always order pizza and food from Village Pizza and Cluck U, and then I stop into University every once in a while, I dont see anything that they do that would make someone think that they are promoting crime or violence. Everyone has to realize the area we live in is next to a high crime area, and I feel South Orange is doing a fine job keeping the crime rate as low as it is. |

Look, the corner is a mess. Try going around there in the summer. There are groups of meneacing looking people hanging around , attracted by the Barber shop, which stays open in the wee hours and the liqour store. One summer morning, I walked by there and although the stores were closed, I was amazed by the tremendous amount of refuse littering the sidewalk. Chicken bones, empty bottles of beer, sandwich wrapping, etc. The palce looks like it is straight out the bowels of Newark and it attracts people who look like they are from there as well. If I wanted to live in a blighted , ghetto-like setting, with gangs of loud young men hanging on the corner, I would have moved further down South Orange avenue , into Newark so I could get the authentic experience. Maybe the trustees could think about not allowing the stores to stay open late. Closing at ,lets say 8 or 9 Pm would curtail some of the activities that we see going on there. |

I'd be very disappointed if I couldn't get pizza or wings after 8pm! And I doubt there's any way such an early closing could be enforced against only that block of stores. You'd have to make it townwide, and I don't think there'd be too much support for that. While I agree that there is occasional rowdiness there, overall, I feel safer having a busy block of stores near me than a closed-up, dark section. Yes, I know there was a robbery there, but there was also a robbery of a deli (I think) over on Valley a while back, and no one suggested having those stores close early in response (and that block is no more blighted than certain parts of Valley). If you do notice illegal activity or if the noise is disturbing you, call the SO police; they do know about that block (and the nearby Seton Hall off-campus housing) and they've always responded swiftly.
