mary james Citizen Username: Max Post Number: 19 Registered: 11-2003 Posted on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 12:29 am: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can someone please explain to me why 99% of people in the area NEVER use their blinkers? It is my No.1 pet peeve whilst driving. Today I was driving on Ridgewood and 4 different cars made both left and right turns without any warning, I was far enough behind them for it not to be dangerous just extremely annoying. Its such a easy thing to do yet very few people do it. When the roads are busy and/or slippy it is especially dangerous and shows no consideration for those travelling behind you? Am I the only one this annoys? sac Citizen Username: Sac Post Number: 909 Registered: 5-2001 Posted on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 7:49 am: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The other day, I was driving along a residential street in town and the driver ahead was going extremely slowly and pulled gradually over to the right. I decided that it appeared safe to pass so I started around to the left. Suddenly, with no signal, (s)he then turned left into a driveway. Fortunately, I was able to brake and avoid hitting them. If it was really necessary to pull farther to the right in order to make the turn (which I question, but possibly was the case), it was ever so much more important to signal the intended turn. Sometimes drivers amaze me!

The veering to the left to make a right, or to the right to make a left, is excusable when the width of ones driveway has been compromised by large piles of snow. The blinker thing is inexcusable. "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" Wayne Gretzky |

Once while driving in Ireland I made a quick turn, (trying to follow directions in a busy town), with no time to use my turn signal. An elderly gentleman driver followed me into the market parking lot that I had been looking for, came up to the window and sternly admonished, "YOU MUST INDICATE, YOU MUST INDICATE!". |

Unfortunately, it's because the drivers are on their cell phones. One hand for the wheel, one for the phone, none left for the blinker. Hang up and drive. |

What's with people who hang out in the passing lane? What's with people blocking a driveway? What's with people who make left turns into parking places? What's with people who leave their car running with kids in it and run into the store? What's with people who do anything they're not suppose to? The better question is, What's With People? Please let us all know when you find out... |

OTOH have you ever been behind a car when the blinker stays on for miles and miles. Yikes! Mindless. |

I use blinkers in NJ, but not when changing lanes in Manhattan. I found that if I signaled, it was a sign to cabbies to speed up and block me from changing lanes. so now I just dart over quickly, before the cabs can cut me off. |

I always use my blinkers, but because most people don't, they don't always believe me. For instance, once I was approaching my driveway, signaling to turn left into it. But meanwhile I had to swing out to go around a parked car on the right. Just before my driveway, I swung back into my lane, but as I started to turn left an SUV that had been behind me started to pull out to go around me. She somehow thought that I was pulling over to the curb. I pointed out that I had been signaling for a left turn but she didn't seem to know what that meant. My husband was once hit while bicycling by a van that pulled over to the left and then suddenly made an unannounced right turn into a driveway. |

There are different driving customs in NJ: 1. don't use your turn signals 2. don't let your driving interfere with your incessant cell phone blabbering. 3. if you see a well-positioned, readable street sign, call the DMV and they will promptly remove it. 4. when making a left turn at a light, don't pull out into the intersection. Otherwise, some of the drivers waiting behind you will be able to make the turn, too. 5. Floor it as you approach a crosswalk, especially if pedestrians are attempting to cross. 6. Roar down sidestreets as kids are walking to school. 7. Be sure to park several feet from the curb on single lane streets. Leave your car as far out into the street as possible. You get extra credit points at night if you put tape over your reflectors so that your parked car isn't visible to other drivers until they are within several inches of the vehicle. |

Subjective and limited, as in viewpoint or perception: “The characters have a blinkered view and, misinterpreting what they see, sometimes take totally inexpedient action” (Pauline Kael). |

In my 30 years of driving, they are consistently the worst and most self-absorbed I've seen. The insurance companies apparently agree with me. Compounding the situation are the NJ roads and signs: the absolute worst. Like living in a Third World country. |

It is the number one thing about New Jersey I hate the most, and this coming from a guy who learned how to drive on the cow paths of Boston. Driving home in the pouring snow the other night from NYC 11:00 NJTNPK people driving 10 maybe 15 miles/hour some *&((*&& in an (yup you guessed it) SUV comes flying up behind me (center lane approx. cant really tell cause the road is completely untreated mind you) and flashes his high beams at me. I pull over after the car next to me slows down and doesnt the (&^$&( in the SUV have a phone pressed to his head. I am not one for wishing death on anyone, and I didnt wish death on him, just an SUV totalling experience that he could walk away from. I was completely flabbergasted. His SUV is less likely to save his life than my Accord is mine. He thinks that because he's got four-wheel drive he's got more traction. But that's wrong. He can get started in slippery conditions more easily, but he's got the same four-wheel braking that everyone else does, with a couple extra thousand pounds of momentum to stop. |

Read "Road Killers" in a recent New Yorker. The false sense of security SUV drivers feel is what causes their wreckless driving. In reality (and generally speaking of course), it is the small Honda owner that is safer because he/she knows their vehicle could get clobbered by one of these monsters, and drives accordingly. It's not about how big your armored tank is -- it's about how you drive that determines your safety. And a lot of SUV drivers feel invincible. |

What about people who stop at an intersection to yield to the guy who is waiting at a STOP sign? Do they not understand that they are not the ones supposed to stop? I'm not talking about a heavy-traffic-courtesy-yield either. I have never seen this behavior anywhere outside of NJ and it is perplexing. |
