According to the NR today, we now have the following new dates on all of the great things to come to SO. Beifus Site - groundbreaking in 4 to 6 months. Gourmet Market - 4 months until approval and then construction will begin SOPAC - groundbreaking in the next 5 months and approval with SHU sometime in Feb. Fishmarket - next month and to be called Pier 51 If this were not so sad it would be funny! |

Jrf, It would be nice if someone actually had a timeline showing the numerous announcements of all the great things to come and how the Village always misses the date. Specifically for Beifus, SOPAC and the grocery store. I think once this is clearly shown it will put all of this into perspective. I recall a few months back that construction was to begin on SOPAC in Jan. We are now heading into Feb and nothing has happened. Malt |

singlemalt, From a post I made back in December...I think is what you are looking for: Posted on Thursday, December 4, 2003 - 4:19 pm: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thinking that maybe the whole "Coming Soon" joke is blown out of proportion, just for "fun", I decided to look through meeting minutes from the BOT over the past year. Following are direct quotes of some of the highlights: Nov 6, 2002: . Irvington Avenue – Architect, Bill Scerbo is working on the design and beautification project for Irvington Avenue. The project is almost complete as far as the development and design stages. This project should be under construction by early Spring. Dec 9, 2002: the Irvington Avenue project is moving quickly Jan 13, 2003: the Beifus site received County approval and demolition of the building will mostly be started in February with construction beginning in early Spring Feb 10, 2003: construction of the Arts Center is anticipated to begin in either March or April. April 14, 2003: The Arts Center - the construction fence has begun to be installed this week so that site preparation can start. May 12, 2003: within a month or two major construction will begin on the Arts Center June 9, 2003: Irvington Avenue improvement project – plans are complete and, hopefully, the project will go out to bid in the next month with a fall construction date anticipated. July 21, 2003: 16 W. South Orange Avenue (new fish market and fish restaurant) should be opening some time in September September 8, 2003: Village President, William Calabrese advised that Mr. Beifus is in the process of bringing in his developer’s agreement which, hopefully, will be finalized within a few weeks October 15, 2003: the Beifus site will hopefully be under construction before January 1, 2004; 10) projected plans and specifications have finally been completed for Irvington Avenue and bids should be requested within a month or so, with construction expected to begin in Spring, 2004 Granted, the BOT doesn't have direct control over every aspect of all of these issues, but is anyone ever going to take responsibility for these endless delays. In my professional life, projects like this with no end in sight would have long since been cancelled and the person(s) responsible for blowing them would have long since been terminated. More recently...Bill Calabrese was quoted a few weks ago that the Seton Hall deal would be announced by the end of THIS Month and Allan Rosen stated construction would begin in March. I can't believe those stories are changing AGAIN in today's paper. (based on jrf's post above)

What I find really annoying is that the NR editor in chief must be in bed with Calabrese and or the board of trustees. They are always coming out with editorials saying things like: it is just coincidental that the demolition of Beifus happened the day before election day and to think otherwise is unjust,or The progress of SO's redevelopment is going along well and we should n't be impatient but rather grateful to have the leaders we have/ Who are they kidding??? |

i didn't say anything about anyone supporting their position; at least that's not what i meant to say. what i meant was it's obnoxious to say bill's in bed with the nr eic. just because the poster doesn't agree with what's written in the paper. i happen to believe the news record is one of the worst town papers around. >>>> Username: Bets Post Number: 484 Registered: 6-2001 Posted on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 12:56 am: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's pretty obnoxious when you can't support your position, j m f r o m s o u t h o r a n g e.

In bed was meant in the figurative way...it seems to me that there must be some relationship/friendship there for the paper to repeatedly paint a supportive picture of the work of the town administrators Re: development when they have largely failed. If the NR wants to talk about other successes of Calabrese and the other BOT members fine but the "everything is going great" editorials lack credibility and I wonder why.} |

thank you for explaining this. i think the 'problem' with the town paper is from what i understand, their main writers, including the editor in chief, don't live in either town (maplewood or south orange). as a result, they are clueless to what is really going on here in the twin towns. if you look at the 'by' lines of the articles, the same person write most of them. i've often wondered myself the reasons stories you would expect to be in the paper don't make it, and how some of the stories that do make the paper get there. why some 'projects' are viewed in a positive way and others are not. an example of this is all the apartment developement. it seems all the arguements concerning the school system, police, fire dept, public works etc against the development of the quarry were not brought up concerning all the proposed apartments planned for the 'village' area. several people, including myself, have asked the news record to question this, they haven't. anyway, i do agree the paper does a poor job of covering the development in town. While all the "coming soon" talk is of interest, The Performing Arts Center is at the top of my list. Wasn't the PAC part of a comprehensive town plan submitted over a decade ago? Is everything in this plan still viable and/or needed? Does anyone have access to the financial reports of Paper Mill Playhouse, the State Theater in New Brunswick and the NJ PAC in Newark? John Harms Theater in Englewood went out of business within the last year. Are these others struggling too? Now with this Seton Hall "deal". What is going to happen when the Faculty of The Hall hears that XXXXX$$$$ are going to something in town and not on their own facilities/research projects/salaries? We're talking about a very specialized building and use. If it doesn't work out, what are the alternatives? |

the PAC is that the thing they are building behind bunnies???? does anyone know how i can find the blue prints to that??? how is that gonna fit??? anywhere in this town for that matter....i love the idea but come on....the commuters complain because their rides have to park and "jump up and down waiving" because the drop off is too busy....what is it gonna be like when they start "construction" (that's a joke in it's self)is this PAC construction really all fit behind that lil white wall??? i almost can't wait to see how the people complain about it!!!! silly lil town! |

Now that it is late February, I recall a post from Dr. Rosen on an earlier thread from December regarding SOPAC: "Arnell has been given the go-ahead and should have a team in place bylate February. They could do site work earlier, but then would have to lay off, which would be self-defeating. Because of weather considerations I tend to believe actual construction will begin in March after the "thaw". So, is the team in place & is construction going to begin next week? |

I am guilty of believing what I was told at the time. The problem is that Arnell was never given the go-ahead. The "word" now, and not mine, is that the project should be in the ground June or July. I will update if I have to. |

sylad: The delay was to permit the new SOPAC Board time to agree on all the construction details. |
