Welcome sunseeker. The library has a great book called "52 Great Day Trips in New Jersey" or something like that. Come take a look.

Welcome to Maplewood, and to the States.

Lancaster County, in Pennsylvania, is nice for a family weekend trip. Here's a link that'll give you some information about the area.

more weekends away: Mystic Connecticut (historical village and ships at the Seaport [www.mysticseaport.org], wonderful Aquarium, as well as Mystic Pizza); Sesame Place (www.sesameplace.com; Langhorne, Pa).

Philadelphia is less than 2 hours away and great for kids - there's a Please Touch Museum for kids 1-7 (www.pleasetouchmuseum.org), a duck tour of the city from spring - fall (amphibious land and water sightseeing that is really fun), plus all the great historical attractions like the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and a fabulous new National Constitution Center.

Norwalk, Connecticut (2+ hours away) has a delightful maritime museum/aquarium, and a charming downtown with funky restaurants.

Crayola Factory in Easton, Pa. - doable for a day trip - you watch crayons being made.

And of course there's Baltimore, Maryland (again a fabulous aquarium) about 3 hours away, Washington DC (4 hours) or Boston, Massachusetts (4 hours)

Museum of Natural History in NYC is easy. Midtown Direct train to Penn Station then C Train uptown to 81st Street. Enter museum through subway exit directly (good in this weather).

The last few times we were at the Nat. History Museum the direct entrance from the subway was closed for security reasons. No big deal though - just walk around outside and get in.

It's a great trip and very easy to do. Or get off at the same stop, walk across Central Park and go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, if your kids are into that kind of thing. Mine is, so we go there a lot.

Also the Liberty Science Museum in Liberty State Park is fun, but probably won't take a whole day to "do". Supplement it with an afternoon of kite-flying in the park. On second thought, wait until spring for that one!

If you go to Philadelphia, also try the Franklin Museum. It's another science museum and I understand it's great fun - my husband and daughter have been several times, somehow I have managed to miss those visits.
