This morning my steam boiler started making a loud high-pitched screeching noise. It seems to be coming from the burners. I don't think all the burners are lighting, there are no flames on the left (in front at least) and looks like soot on the grill there (much more than the rest of the grill). There are red flames among the blue. I've turned off the heat, at least until my family leaves the house. We have PSE&G "Worry-Free Contract," which apparently means "We have your money so we don't have to worry"...they'll stroll out here sometime tomorrow. Does anyone have an informed opinion on whether it is safe to turn it back on? |

Seems prudent to leave it off. As long as there are some flames, I don't see any risk of a gas explosion. OTOH, the soot would indicate incomplete combustion and the possibility of carbon monoxide. When was the burner unit last cleaned? |

> When was the burner unit last cleaned? Installed 4 years ago and not cleaned since. Scheduled to be cleaned among other things on Tuesday. I'm not making this up. |
