According to the Village website (http://www.southorange.org/default.asp), Skating is prohibited at the Duck Pond. However, I drove past yesterday afternoon & saw at least 20 people skating there.

Considering it has been below freezing for over 2 weeks (except yesterday), I am surprised that skating is still prohibited.

Is the Village website incorrect or were the people skating "breaking the law"?

I remember in years past the town putting out a red flag or green flag, as an indicator of whether the ice was thick enough to skate.

It would make sense for it to be illegal, to protect the town from injury liability. It would also make sense to never enforce this particular law (wink wink).

David: Here is the link to the village web page - http://www.southorange.org/news.asp?page=5
and the explanation of where the flag is:
Skating will be allowed when the ice is thick enough to safely enjoy these recreational activities. Look for the flag located at the rear of the shelter house for the current status. Green means skating allowed - shelter open and Red means dangerous conditions exist and no skating will be allowed

The headline on the webpage about skating should be changed since you have to read to find out that skating is ok when the green flag is up.

The ...until... part of the headline makes you read further where it explains the flag color scheme.

Thanks, Mark. The website should definitely be updated. It makes it sound like if/when conditions are OK, the flag scheme will be used (implying that CURRENTLY it is not OK).

BTW...is there currently a green flag? I was gonna go practice a few pirouettes later today. Just kidding!

It appears the Village website has now been updated.

Thank you!
