after moving into our house, our homeowners policy provider has informed us that we need to have a handrail installed on our front steps. is there a contractor out there that will do a job that can be faithful to the 20's era architecture?

If you're looking for a metal handrail, I highly recommend Hillside Railing. They were prompt, courteous, reasonable, and fabricated the exact design we specified. I don't have their number, but they're in the book (in Hillside).

I second Hillside Railing. They did ours at about 1/2 the price of another quote we got, and they are all of the things that tmb said.

I third Hillside, they are family owned. They installed our railing while we were at work and left the bill in the mailbox

Hate to sound like Virgilian, but wouldn't a wood handrail be more in keeping with the style of a 1920s fram colonial revival?

Personally, I could never understand why brick steps were used on frame houses, but that just may be me.

I agree with bobk on this one.
Brick with wood looks good if done right.

Thank you all! Hillside is great -- and CHEAP! And fast. I'm getting something pretty basic for some back steps, solely to meet the insurance company's requirements. Doing it quickly and cheaply -- though I understand they are ready and willing to do fancier work.
