Ok. I realize that this might be a sensitive issue, but I have to ask.... Is there a time limit for parking in a handicap spot? The reason that I ask is because on most mornings when I take the train and most evenings when I get off the train, I notice the same Nissan parked in the handicap spot right in front of the hobby shop on Sloan St. Obviously, this person uses the spot for commuting purposes. They have a handicap permit - but I'm not sure if they have a village or NJT permit. I have no problem with someone who is handicapped and has a permit to tie up a handicap spot, but I think that this might be the only handicap spot on Sloan Street. If it is the only spot, it is unfair for handicap people who want to shop on Sloan Street and can't find a closer 'metered' spot. Are there no parking spots in the train lot for handicapped commuters? I have not been over there, but I do recall that because of the construction, maybe the spots are blocked off.

from what i understand a vechile (with proper license plates or hang tag) parking in a marked handicapped space may park for no more then 24 consecitive hours. you don't need an additional south orange permit to park in the handicap spots on sloan st. maybe the person works in one of the area stores? to answer your question about the handicapped spots in the new commuter lot, yes thee are spots there. by law a certain number of spots have to be handicapped accessible. i forget what the ratio is though. if you think someone might be abusing the handicapped spot, like maybe someone is using a tag they shouldn't be, call the police and have them check it out. i know several disabled people who don't use the south orange train station for midtown direct because of the stairs. i also knew several people who would borrow hang tags to park at the pool, until the police caught on. |

A blue tag allows a vehicle to park for 24 hours in any designated parking space within the state of NJ. Additionally tags allow vehicles to park at no cost at a metered space within NJ. A red tag is a temporary tag that expires on a date specified on the front. Tags must be displayed properly on the rear view mirror. Tags are issued to individuals only and each individual should also possess an ID card that accompanies the hanging tag. Tags are individually numbered, similar to a lic. plate. A TAG DOES NOT ALLOW A VEHICLE TO PARK ILLEGALLY. VEHICLES DISPLAYING A HANDICAPPED TAG MUST BE LEGALLY PARKED.

I've heard about abuse of the handicap tags before... Kevin, I think it's worth checking out when you repeatedly see the same vehicle in the same spot, on a regular basis. It's all about the parking with me too... |

There are some spaces in town where it may appear that individuals are abusing the tags purposes. However, you need to remember the tags allow 24 hour parking by state law and are not affected by municipal ordinance. If you see a car in the same space on a daily basis it most likely is a local employee or resident and if the tag is properly displayed then the vehicle may park there. You would be better off attempting to have more spaces designated handicapped by the township in areas that are lacking. |

One more comment: This is by far my pet peeve because my mother is severly handicapped with two knee replacements and she carries her placard in her purse everywhere. The tag is for the individual only, and that individual must be a passenger or driver of the vehicle when it gets displayed. Friends and family are not allowed to use the placard without the designee. the placard comes with an ID card the size of a credit card identifying the owner of the placard. It must be in the possession of the individual to display the placard in a vehicle. |
