Hi-

Going to NJPAC tomorrow night and heard that there were some great Vietnamese restaurants in Newark. Thought we'd explore... Any recommendations (and directions?)

I think that's Portuguese.

Please post if you find out...we'd love to find Vietnamese restaurants. There are several in Bergen county.

try posting on or reading chowhound.com ... youre likely to get a response to anything unusual or off the radar screen from the foodies there.

There are no Vietnamese restaurants in Newark, which is why I thought there was a mistake. There are Vietnamese restaurants on Newark Avenue in Jersey City. There's a good one in Englewood called Saigon Republic. There's one in Nutley, too, but I can't recall its name right now.

Hope that helps

The Vietnamese restaurant in Nutley is Little Saigon, at 231 Franklin Ave. 973.235.0790. We ate there once. The food was a little less flavorful than the Vietnamese food I am used to, but it's okay. I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

Of course, this information doesn't help with your NJPAC dinner.

So which Vietnamese restaurant in Jersey City should we try first?

The one I went to was Saigon Cafe or Miss Saigon or something_Saigon. It's near the waterfront and packed for lunch. Haven't been for dinner.

1) Saigon Gourmet  (CLOSED)
EDIT, July 21 2003: Saigon Gourmet was sold to a relative and the original owner opened up Saigon Republic Vietnamese Cuisine (see entry #6), a sit down restaurant in Englewood. Saigon Gourmet has since closed but Saigon Republic is doing very well.

2) Little Saigon: In Nutley off of Franklin St. Another teeny little restaurant with only about 6 tables, gets very busy and standing room only on the weekends. Extensive menu, strong Vietnamese crowd.

231 Franklin Ave # C  Nutley, NJ (973) 235-0790

3) Saigon Cafe: In Jersey City: Very hip restaurant, frequented by the Village People (as in the 70's gay music ensemble) no less. Greenwich-village type cafe surroundings with great food. Primarily american crowd.

188 Newark Ave  Jersey City, NJ (201) 332-8711

4) Miss Saigon Vietnamese, just down the street from Saigon Cafe. Probably more authentic as it attacts a strong Vietnamese crowd but the food is less interesting than Cafe's , but does a very good job with the traditional stuff such as Pho and the appetizers.

249 Newark Ave  Jersey City, NJ (201) 792-4768

5) East Saigon: Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant with stronger ephasis on Chinese. Of all the ones listed here I liked this one the least, I found their Pho to be a bit too watery.

473 Cedar Ln # B  Teaneck, NJ (201) 928-0878

I did a search on "Vietnamese" category in Yahoo yellow pages with Morristown as the epicenter, it came up with a couple of restaurants in Newark and Plainfield that I have never been to. Anyone try some of these?

6) Saigon Republic Vietnamese Cuisine
http://www.saigonrepublic.com/
58 West Palisades Avenue (across from McDonalds)
Englewood, NJ 07632
201-871-4777 phone
201-871-7477 fax
Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 11:15-9:15
Sunday, Brunch/Early Dinner 11:30-6:30
BYOB

(Found on eGullet)

I note that there is a reference to Newark Vietnamese restaurants, so I could be wrong. However, I've done work for the Newark Restaurant & Hospitality Assoc. and never noticed any mentions. I'll ask someone there.

Thanks for the foodie references. It's nice to get a recommendation from someone who actually knows what the food is SUPPOSED to taste like.

An update on Little Saigon in Nutley: it recently burned to the ground! Unfortunate, since it was quite good (not just my opinion, but shared by several others at eGullet, etc.). Owners are presumably looking for another site.
