This Sat., Feb 7, CHS will host the men's and women's district three fencing tournament. The event will be going on all day as teams from sev en H.S.'s and Columbia compete for the NJ dist. 3 team and individual titles.

Columbia is favored to sweep the tournament as its' mens and womens teams are the Star Ledger's no. 1 ranked teams in the State.

An update on the season: The mens team, (last years state champ) was favored to repeat as state champs when the entire varsity squad from last year returned. The varsity squad ( made up of nine seniors) is undefeated and was the winner of the prestigious Cetrullo Tournament last month. (the first time the Columbia mens team has won this event).

The womens team also was the preseason favorite to repeat as State champs. This years squad is made up of five seniors, three juniors and a freshman as starters and six sophmores in reserve.

The girls lost their first dual meet to Teaneck by one point and missed winning the Santelli Tournament also by one point! Last week, the women regained their position on top of the Star Ledger ranking as Vorhees H.S. lost to Bernards H.S. in a dual meet.

Seniors Marcus Miller, Chris Campbell, Adam Hendricks and Hatti Melnitsky and freshman Abby Janto all qualified to compete in the national Junior Olympic tournament in Cleveland, Ohio next week.

So, as usual, the Columbia Fencing teams dominate the state rankings and could repeat as state champs again this year. If you want to see them in action come to the H.S. gym on Saturday to cheer them on as they attempt to win their district titles. Admission is free, the event will last all day and the two squads deserve the community's support as they represent the most successful athletic program at CHS. There's 131 active student members on the squads this year!

To those of you who didn't see this Sunday's Star Ledger Sports section....

Saturday at the High School, the CHS Girls Fencing Team won the NJSIAA, District 3, Epee Team competition, the Foil Team competition, the Saber Team competition (our saber team was undefeated) AND......the Overall NJSIAA District 3 Team Trophy.

The CHS Boys Fencing Team finished a disappointing second to arch rival Milburn (they lost by one bout) for the Overall District 3
title, however, the Saber squad won the Saber Team trophy, to bring the grand total of yesterday's new additions to the cases outside the main gym to FIVE!

Additionally, both the Boys and the Girls Teams qualified to take part in the State Team Tournament "Fence Off" beginning Feb. 23 at the High School and continuing every day after school for the entire week, also, all six individual weapon squads qualified for the State
indvidual Weapons Championship at Watchung Hills
H.S. on Feb 28.

Finally, 6 girls and 4 boys qualified to compete in the NJ State individual Championships to be held at Drew University on March 6. 3 of the 10 qualified by winning individual district 3 crowns: seniors Marcus Miller and Halli Melnitsky were victorious in saber and freshman
Abigail Caparros-Janto won the Girls foil title.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of the members of our combined H.S. Fencing Team.

Milburn considers us the evil empire.
That school was plastered with beat Columbia posters. [A confidential source.]
What better motivation could there be?
Go team!!!

At what age can kids start fencing? I think my daughter would like it. Are there any non-school-related places of instruction?

shoshannah,
Any age is good however many coaches think 8-9 is the "right" time to start.

Go to: New Jersey Division USFA.clubs to find places to take lessons.

Can kids wait until they get to CHS to learn or do they have to have had lessons and already have experience in order to have a chance to get in the program at the school?

Many kids don't start fencing until they get to CHS. One of my daughter's friends moved here as a junior and started then, and fenced varsity for two years. I'd say that most of the current team did not start fencing until high school, but they are starting to get kids coming in with experience.

Sac,

Kathy's right, most of the current team started as freshmen at CHS. Our kids are lucky to go to Columbia which has the best high school developmental fencing program in the country. However, at whatever age one starts, it takes a minimum of 3 years to develop into a good fencer, so if a child doesn't begin fencing as a freshman, the odds on making varsity before graduation are not good.

BTW, I believe only one member of the current team fenced prior to their freshman year.

I won't comment on the "fencing classes" offered by the adult school.

My recollection of the "fencing classes" in the Adult School's summer program is that they are for young children and intended only to introduce the basic concept. I think that they use Nerf weapons. They certainly do not teach actual fencing skills.

Best of luck in the finals!
