Does Jay's Grill do a Philly cheese steak-style sandwich? I've been missing them...

My kid is a big fan of NetNomads, and we like both the Meineke and Jiffy Lube businesses on SA a lot. Also the diner. Meaning to check out the Beaded Path (I'm not a jewelry person, but my daughter is).

Still a ways to go to bring me out at night due to traffic and other. I think a police station would help. Has there been a hardware store in recent memory? We end up in Millburn, or HD...

Dave, Just curious as to what Temple you saw on SA? Could that have been the Apter Funeral Home property that is now the new Mormon Church? If it was on the same side as Coney Island Hot Dog then that is the new church site.

There use to be a great old time hardware store called Maplecrest located near the post office where the day car center now is. It closed shortly after HD opnened, although part of the reason may have been the family that ran it wanted to retire.

I have been critical of the SA project for quite a while because I never thought, and still don't think, that it will ever bring in enough additional tax revenue to pay for itself. However, if you look at the project in a larger sense (improving a blighted area) it seems to be coming along nicely. Just don't expect Borders :-(

r2boy, Yes, that is it. Thanks for the correction.
I'm sure I missed a lot. It was my first time walking the length of the Avenue. Everyone should walk it.

Ok,

I am willing to finalize my thought process on Jerry & Vic BLVD. by quoting one of my favorite MOL posters who probably has this thing nailed on the head.

Mr. Bobk writes: "I have been critical of the SA project for quite a while because I never thought, and still don't think, that it will ever bring in enough additional tax revenue to pay for itself. However, if you look at the project in a larger sense (improving a blighted area) it seems to be coming along nicely. Just don't expect Borders."

Straw concludes:
If bad is better then awful, I guess we can all say its an improvement. However, long term 4-5 years I believe we may wind up seeing more of the same.

As far as this Jerryc trying to convince another poster that 10 young men staring at him, was probably nothing more then his discomfort around blacks....All I have to say is you're are going to have to do better then that. And again, just more reasons why security and policing is not working on SA.

Heck, if you don't believe me ask my car which was recently STOLEN FROM SPRINGFIELD AVE...

Straw... why no comment on the New police station thread?

Wouldn't that much police presence be enough to get you back in support of the Avenue, or at least come over for dinner?

Ok, I have been lurking a lot lately, especially with the strep throat, but I feel the need to jump in.

Jerry C is right. As I have always said Straw gives us conservatives a bad name. Hes a joke. Everyone knows it. Please dont think he speaks for us.

Moving right along...

My thoughts on the avenue. I find myself doing more business there as well as many others.
1) P&P Lawnmower fixed my snowthrower, very nice guys and reasonable.
2) The Maplechek staff always has nice things to say and their coffee and fresh baked muffins is good stuff and is convenient enroute to i78.
3) We order in from Primo
4) We get our drugs at RiteAid.
5) Paint at Riccardis.
6) Banking
7) Nomads
8) Dr. Orenburgs office behind D&D
9) Sage Diner is a great place to go with a friend for a burger.
10) Panda Kitchen, everyone that visits us always asks for Panda.
11) I am finding more and more reasons to go there each week. My next trip is to the hobby store and dipietros.

Wish list
1) The traffic still needs to slow down. People are still treating SA like a freeway.

2) The Jacks Autobody building still needs a makeover. Its an eyesore

3) The polish meats/island spice building is also in need of repairs and refacing.

4) I hope to see the bumpouts completed from Maplechek to D&D as soon as the weather gets warm.

5) I would like to see more police presence and traffic enforcement.

6) Get rid of that guy with the tan coat in front of riteaid that asks everyone for .75 cents before you walk in the door. I was worried he was going to hit my mom up the other day. For 10,000 in taxes can someone do something about this? Hes there almost everyday.

7) 10 kids in front of papa Johns might concern me also. If its 10 kids with long t-shirts, doo rags and jeans down to their knees with nothing to do but stare at everyone that drives up then yes, I would be concerned. If these kids were wearing khakis and dressed normal I would bet they would seems as much of a threat. Sorry, but its the truth. If we let our kids dress like hoodlums then thats what they will appear to be even if they are not.

8) From recent threads, It sounds like someone needs to talk with Papa johns management about their housekeeping. If they dont comply then start fining them.

Thank you Jerry C and Everyone that has contributed to the changing the avenue. EVERYONE appreciates what you are doing. Keep up the good work!!

Since we have control of the Ave, why can't we change the timing of the lights on our stretch? That would slow down traffic and in fact, make it annoying for the thru-trafficker and he could find another route (like 78?).

Straw dont be sore because I got your number.

BTW you must not be all that wealthy to drive a Cherokee sport, so there tough guy. Maybe one day I will lend you my M 350. Oh yeah, thats a mercedes in case you didnt know.

If you measure a mans wealth by the taxes he pays then you are as dumb as we all know you to be.

If a man's wealth is determined by what he does not pay in taxes, then there sure aren't any wealthy people in Maplewood.

Going to Verjus tonight for my wife's bday. Don't worry Straw, we live on the poor side of town (our taxes are under 10,000) so our car is not worth stealing. But if you're not going to DiPietros, Verjus, Ricardi, Maplewood Tire, NetNomads, etc. its your loss (I haven't tried Primo or Panda or Island Spice, but keep meaning to. I like Maplewood Pizza and Trattoria. Joe's is a greasy mess and is not in Maplewood anyway.)

Island Spice is really good. I had a fish dish there that I had never heard of. A few weeks later and had the same thing. They could stand to get a lesson in decor, but the food is good, and the folks are VERY nice.

Dr. Orenberg is an excellent GP. We also use the vet across the street from him, and we like the vet a lot, too.

Some places on SA we love:
-Mr. Gus dry cleaners- I arrived one evening after he had locked up (and was outside the building), and he opened back up for me- very nice man.
-Soups & Scoops
-Maplecheck- has the best breakfast rolls and my dad (who lives on Long Island) goes there every morning for coffee & the paper when he visits. The owner now asks me how my dad is doing when I go in, which gives it a warm & fuzzy small-town feel.
-Jay's Grill and the Monster Burgers!
-Riccardi Paints- I needed paint mixing sticks for a church school project (needed over 50 of them) and they donated them. Small thing, I know, but Home Depot wanted to charge us.
-Pizza Primo

I have an idea, and I think everyone including Straw will go for it. Lets replace the new SA bricks with heavier gold bars. The gold bars will not pop out because they are so heavy. We could also re-pave the streets with platinum and put in a monorail. The town could subsidize a bunch of new businesses to people with a pipe dream but no experience (to be politically correct, only democrats would be eligible for the no interest loans) and then it would guarantee success.
We will prevent people from stealing the gold and platinum by building six giant police stations and could even build a giant library, fire station and courthouse while we are at it. To pay for it we will simply have another re-val where everyone to the west of the train will get 5X their old tax rate and everyone to the east of the tracks will hold about steady.
I am sure I am missing plenty of other ways to fix up SA but I think the creative town spenders could add some more ideas that I have missed.

"You kids today have it easy. When I was a kid everything was HUGE. My dad was nearly four times bigger than me. You couldn't even see the tops of counters.... Then gradually everything became smaller until it was the manageable size it is today."

To get back on topic:

Today, I saw the benches at the corner of Prospect and SA. They look like really nice benches. I couldn't figure out why they looked a little strange until someone pointed out to me that they face inward (towards the store windows) rather than outwards towards the street. Wouldn't they add a more friendly, spacious feeling if they were facing the avenue?

This style of inward-facing benches is common in several cities. On the other hand, I have rarely seen people actually sitting in them, so who knows...

I think the inward facing benches are to encourage conversation and interaction with people walking on the side walk since the benches are probably located to the street side of the side walk, although I haven't seen them.

The compromise approach would have been to put in backless benches, which I have seen other places.

they face in different directions -- some face the street, most face the buildings, and I believe even a few are perpendicular to the street.

anyway, I noticed some street-facing benches in fron of the bank parking lot last night when I got takeout at Island Spice.

It was our first time there, and now I'm wondering why it took us so long. Really, really good, and reasonably priced too. We especially enjoyed the jerk pork. Next time we're going to try curry, and a fish platter, and some soup.
