I went back for a late lunch today, and re-ordered the Rueben & chips, just to check for kitchen consistency spanning different meal shifts. Had a Newcastle (I like it better than Guinness, but is Courage even better?), and sat alone facing the wide-screen TV (which, I have only just noticed, seriously distorts the picture... Am I wrong?) for about twenty minutes. While waiting for my my food to arrive, I surveyed the place in the afternoon light. I was faintly reminded of Ed's Place, the run-down but warm and welcoming mill I frequented (too often)with dorm-mates lo these many years ago in The Salt City, and even a bit of McSorely's and The Corner Bistro in The Apple. My lunch was last night's redux, and equally delish. Happy I was, identically, so hurray for The Gate. But given it's popularity and my own clostrophia, plus a strong aversion to waiting for a table, I'll probably stick to late weeknights and lunches. Or maybe just pop in for a quick pint and a shot of nostalgia... --Soda |

Cent'anni and the pub both have bars and the comparison ends there. Cent'anni is fine dining and the pub fare is just that. You cannot compare Chef Joe's creations at Cent'anni with anything the pub serves. One goes to the pub to drink and eat a quick meal;one goes to Cent'anni to dine. I like both but cannot compare them as being equal at all. |

Sorry, r2boy, but anyplace (like Cent'anni) that doesn't serve beer on tap, and on top of that charges $5 for (bottled ! ) beer, can't be called a bar - just a place that happens to have a liquor license. |

Luanda, please reread my post above. I stated they both have bars(as in furniture)...O'Reilly's,Cryans and the Pub to me are bars..Cent'anni is a fine restaurant that has a bar unlike any other fine restaurant like Jocelyn's or Celebrated Food in the village. |

my only issue with Cent'Anni being considered "fine dining" is the high chairs in the foyer. Their prices are very expensive and their food is very good and I really like the people there ... I wish they's have different music though and seeing those high chairs there, in the doorway, bugs me. |

the smell of the sweet smelling stuff they put in the bathrooms there is what bugs me! It wafts throughout the whole place. But I love a martini at the bar with one of their appetizers as a meal after a movie. THe difference to me between the two is this...at c'entanni I feel like a grown-up and at st james I feel like a co-ed. So, sometimes I feel like a nut, sometimes I don't (well, actually, I always feel like a nut! but you get the picture.) |

I'm just glad I don't have to get drunk at home any more. It's so refreshing to wake up on someone else's bathroom floor for a change... _______________ Do Not Pass Go |

St. James Gate is a vast improvement from Maguires though sometimes I wish they left the name the same for convenience. Soda: How do you equate St. James with The Corner Bistro? I don't get that at all. |

Sat night was a nice Pub night. TV off. and lots of locals chatting it up with each other-- and there's the Corner Bistro comparison, I think - the CB of pre 1990 that is. Still agreat place, but much much younger and transient |

St. James Gate is much newer then the Corner Bistro and the decor is a lot more expensive. Some however may like their bars/pubs a little more rustic like the Bistro. If St James Gate can make a burger as good as the Corner Bistro (best in the city, in my opinion), were in business. |

I'm not sure about how I feel now that there's a bar here. I will go check it out. I just hope it's not too yuppyish... like the rest of Maplewood's has been becoming. Blah. |

The food is good. Far too may kids for my taste. The pubs I'm used to are not filled with children running up and down the isles! |
