Can anyone recommend a good dance school for a 4 1/2-year old girl? My daughter is dying to take a real dance class, in a real studio. She took a Stories in Motion class a couple of years ago and liked it (at a place in Basking Ridge...long story), but I need to find a good studio here in Maplewood or in South Orange for her that can either offer just ballet or ballet plus other dance in one class. Ideally, she'd start taking classes right away, but we could also wait until summer or fall, whenever new sessions start. We live right around the corner from the Maplewood Dance Center on Maplewood Ave., so naturally I'm going to hit that up, but I'm also interested in where people go besides there. I really want to keep it local because my nanny will need to drive her to and from lessons, and she's not really big on driving around outside of town. Specifically, has anyone tried that Front & Center place over by CVS (that's close enough to us)? Thanks in advance!

Miss Kathy at the Village Dance Academy in the village (just up the stairs from Freemans) is wonderful. She offers ballet, tap, ballet & tap (combo), jazz, and hip hop, I think. Lots of local kids go there. She has classes in the afternoon and early evening. My older daughter loves her.

If you need something at the weekend, I think the Baird Center in S.O. offers ballet on saturday but you would need to double check that.

Actually, weekends are worse than weekdays for a few reasons. Thanks, Bookgal.

It seems like every budding ballerina in town takes their lessons either from Miss Kathy (Village Dance) or Miss Anne (NJ Dance Center) Those are definitely good ones to check out. Perhaps also the Bette White Dance Center on Springfield Ave?

My daughter and I loved Miss Kathy as a teacher for many years. She is kind, low-key, patient. Her recitals were well-organized and featured each and every little dancer very well with no up-tight rules about no photos and no videos.
Front-n-Center in Millburn seems more business-like, more disorganized, more chaotic (altho I do not now have any first-hand experience with the classes for younger children.)
