What's SO like for single people? I'm a female in my mid 30's who is finally leaving Manhattan for greener pastures. I'm looking for a nice community and have been recommended Montclair or South Orange as possible destinations. Housing prices in Montclair are just unbelievable so I'm thinking of giving SO a shot.

Is it mostly families in SO? Would it be difficult for a single girl to find things to do? Any insight would be appreciated!

My opinion is that there isn't much to do in regards to a huge variety of restaurants, nightlife & other singles. I would think that Montclair or Hoboken provide much more of that.

I am a recently married 30 something who moved from Hoboken to S. Orange. So far, I love SO, and the people that we have met are very nice. However, if I were single, I'm not sure I would feel the same. Also, I am probably one of the youngest people in my neigborhood.

Anyway, Hoboken tends to be mid to late 20's. There are 30 somethings, but you'd be on the older side. Personally I feel that Hoboken offers little parking, no yards, and cramped quarters. All for a little less money. Compared to the city, there's less culture, less great restaurants, and less to do. Therefore, if I were choosing between Hoboken and Manhattan, I'd choose Manhattan.

Montclair probably had more of a night life and a "scene" compared to SO, but nothing like the city. BTW, My wife lived in Montclair for a years and she also loves Maplewood/SO.

I'm not sure if this was helpful or more confusing. I guess the bottom line is what is it that you would want to do? My only other suggestion is to look into Morristown.

Heather,

You can find love'n around a corner, everywhere... however, you won't find a better place than Maplewood/SO for live'n, anywhere.

Welcome to MOL... the posting is free, the sense of community, priceless.

Heather,

I'm a single in my 30's (for a few more months anyhow) and I've been here for almost 3 years. I was never much of one for the club scene or similar and have owned in the suburbs since my mid-20s.

As the only single in my neighborhood, I'm proabably something of an oddity, but my neighbors are great, and I've never felt like I don't fit in in any way.

South Orange is probably mostly families, but it's also one of the most friendly places I've lived. If you're ready for 'greener pastures', you couldn't pick a better spot.

Being married with two kids, I would say that S0-M is a great place. If I was single and looking to move out of Manhattan I would look in Milburn, Summit, Westfield or Morristown. These towns also have many more condos if your not looking for a house and the taxes will be much lower. I think they have more to offer a single person, you may want to also consider (no sleep till) Brooklyn. Moving here would drastically reduce your dating market unless you’re looking for someone that is 35 and still living with their parents, if that is the case let me know I can hook you up with my neighbor’s kid.

How much lower are the taxes in Millburn than they are in SO

Ok -- speaking as a single guy in his 40's (with 2 kids, primary custody) -- I moved here 3 years ago when I was engaged - but that ended [yep, her loss -- missing this great area and me ;-) ] -- the neighbors here have many friends -- and there are plenty of single women.

No, not lots of single bars, clubs, etc. around -- but this is a very socially active area.

If you like having a good time, can smile and laugh -- you'll enjoy your life here!

hey if you find any nice single NORMAL 40ish men, let me know because I sure cant find many here...

echoing what othes have said, south orange in a nice place to live. it's only a short drive to montclair or morristown and a short train ride to hoboken or nyc for a nightlife. (if you're into the club scene, which i'm not)
