What's SO like for single people? I'm a female in my mid 30's who is finally leaving Manhattan for greener pastures. I'm looking for a nice community and have been recommended Montclair or South Orange as possible destinations. Housing prices in Montclair are just unbelievable so I'm thinking of giving SO a shot.

Is it mostly families in SO? Would it be difficult for a single girl to find things to do? Any insight would be appreciated!

Being married with two kids, I would say that S0-M is a great place. If I was single and looking to move out of Manhattan I would look in Milburn, Summit, Westfield or Morristown. These towns also have many more condos if your not looking for a house and the taxes will be much lower. I think they have more to offer a single person, you may want to also consider (no sleep till) Brooklyn. Moving here would drastically reduce your dating market unless you’re looking for someone that is 35 and still living with their parents, if that is the case let me know I can hook you up with my neighbor’s kid.

I second Sylad. I have a single 30-something friend in Summit which has a bit more of a night life, but honestly Morristown is a much better choice. Longer commute if you work in NYC though. Another thought is Hoboken which is very singles oriented, but it is not much "greener" than NYC. Prices are high there as well.

Millburn, according to my single friends, may be a bit uncomfortable because many social activities seem to be family or couple oriented. It is probably like that with most of the suburban New Jersey towns... certainly increasing in intensity the farther west you go.

As far as the dating market, some single friends of mine are using the online dating services (like Match.com and JDate.com) with amazing success. So, your locality is no barrier anymore to finding dates.

One thing about Millburn... it is host to probably the biggest and gaudiest meat-market in the area... Martini's. You have people coming to Millburn from all over New Jersey (and even NYC) to meet that newly divorced bond trader from Short Hills!

I remember when it was a nice neighborhood bar. No more...

this may be of no help - but recently i read in a sunday star ledger about single type and married without children type restaurants/ clubs/ bars were opening in many more nj towns. possibly you could do a search in the star ledger archives. they mentioned many diff. towns - just cant remember enough about it to give you specifics

I believe that Red Bank is a good town for singles. You can take a ferry to NYC.
