Who remembers all the words to the old TV jingle that begins, "Buckle up for safety, buckle up," and ends, "When you're driving buckle up"? I always sing the first two lines to my kids, then hum the rest because I can't remember the words. My kids love the tune, and it works to get them excited about buckling. I did a google search, but only found allusions to the song, not the lyrics. Anyone?

Buckle Up

Drivin’ in the car
buckle up, buckle up
no matter how far
buckle up, buckle up
turn the radio up
sing a buckle up song
rock back and forth
go ahead sing along
the wheels go round
there’s a bump, bump, bump
everybody in the car buckle up
Mama’s in the front
buckle up, buckle up
chewin’ bubble gum
buckle up, buckle up
the music got her bouncin’
up and down in her seat
tap, tap, tappin’
keepin’ time with her feet
the wheels go round
there’s a bump, bump, bump
everybody in the car buckle up
The rain comes down
buckle up, buckle up
turn the windwipes on
buckle up, buckle up
listen to the engine
purr, purr, purr
sounds like a cat
but it’s not, it’s a car
the wheels go round
there’s a bump, bump, bump
everybody in the car buckle up

Hmmm. Don't think that's the one I'm referring to. The one that's going through my head only has only about 8 or 9 measures. It was, I think, a public service announcement from the Nat'l Highway Traffic Safety Admin.

That's it! Though there seems to be some discrepancy in the exact words. I remember the last line being, "Buckle up for safety, when you're driving buckle up!" Did you know these words from memory, or did you look them up somewhere?

Now I can't get the "buckle up" jingle out of my head.

My favorite. Anyone remember this one?

---------------------

Neighborhood suburban spouse
Drives a snowplow around his house
Says "Shoveling leads to heart attack"
But he smokes cigarettes by the pack

To get... right to the heart of the matter
Where there's smoke!
Where there's smoke!
Where there's smoke!
(spoken) Where there's smoke, there's danger of heart disease

Shoshannah, I think you may be right. I was going from memory and remembered it slightly differently from Nancy but incorporated her version somewhat anyway. I've had this in my head longer than 30 years, though!

I always think of this seat belt song in the same vein as the "library song." Nancy, help me out here.

Oh the place for you and the place for me is the New York Public Library.
There are histories, there are mysteries
It's the latest, it's the greatest
It's the library!

(Cornball that I am and always was, I took these to heart from the start.)

There's a place for you and a place for me,
it's the local public library.
They have books and things that they lend for free
It's the latest, it's the greatest, it's the library.

Educational, informational,
entertainment that's sensational.
It's a way of life, it's for you and me
It's the latest, it's the greatest, it's the library.

They have histories, they have mysteries
And for mothers, books of recipes
See a movie show, hear a symphony
It's the latest, it's the greatest, it's the library.

lol!

I served as a seatbelt safety "girl' in the mid-80's -- I sang a series of "Buckle Up" songs and "raps" for late night public service spots. I can only remember the chorus :

Buckle Up! It only takes a sec
It might just save you from a broken neck

B-B-B-buckle up!
Buckle Up! Buckle Up!

(Add Supremes-ish hand claps and pointing at the masses when you say "Up!")

Probably not the lyrics you're trying to remember - I just was thrilled to see a thread about seatbelt safety songs.
