Got a call about an hour ago that my child had been evacuated from Jefferson to Columbia due to lack of heat at Jefferson. After scrambling to get someone to pick him up (I work in the city), I am now wondering if Jefferson will have school tomorrow. It sounds pretty serious, if they had to evacuate the entire school. Does anyone have further information on this? I'm trying to set up my contingency plans for tomorrow.

No word about tomorrow as of yet. I would make the contingency plans to be on safe side. If cancelled, I'm sure the phone chain will kick in again.

As background, electricity in the Jefferson area was off and on about 3 times earlier today. The Jefferson School boiler would not turn back on so the decision to go to CHS auditorium was made. They did get lunch, albeit room temperature. THe kids were watching Monsters Inc when I picked up my kid and a neighbor kid.

I realize contacting all those parents with short notice is difficult but this was a botch job. My wife was contacted hours after the fact and told the school she would pick up our child along with his friend (friends parents told the school to please let my wife pick up their child). They made this kid (who doesn't take the bus) get on the bus and dropped him at the last stop when the driver noticed no parents were there to great the child. The child had to walk a considerable distance and was praying someone would be home. Luckily a sibling was home (there was no guarantee).

Who's responsible for this ?. As far as I'm concerned by forcing this child on to a bus without any parent notification and then dumping the child at the last stop, put this child in harms way. Shame!!!!

I just drove by Jefferson and all the lights are on. Means power is back, so I'm assuming school is on for tomorrow.

whoever was responsible for contacting the parents did a very poor job. the kids were all kept at chs until someone picked them up. i saw parents at jefferson who had no idea what was happening. no notes on the doors, nothing...

My first call (around 1 PM) came from the afterschool program. They were very efficient in making sure that we knew that there would be no ASP that afternoon. My phone chain call did not come until almost 3 PM, and she was quite surprised to hear that I had already received a call. I would have been in real trouble it my first notification had been at 2:45 PM.
