We are thinking of renting a house by the shore this summer for a week or two, but don't know where to start. Does anyone know where I can get any info on rentals, such as listings, costs, etc.? Also, are there any specific towns you would recommend (or advise that we stay away from)? We have twin boys who will be 1.5 years old then, so we would like some place relatively quiet with decent restaurants and beaches, and perhaps a swimming pool we could use. Thanks |

bmpsab: you should consider renting the week or two after labor day. The beaches are much less crowded and the cost is also reduced. we rented in cape may point at this time of year before our kids started school. very peaceful. also, the water is at its warmest. oots |

I would recommend Stone Harbor, NJ. It's quiet, family oriented, good beaches and nice restaurants there and in it's sister town Avalon. The week beginning August 28th prices drop significantly. There are lots of listings online. Some rental agencies are: Diller/Fischer, Atlantic Beach Realty, Parrothead Realty and many others. |

I know of many people who take vacations at the Jersey Shore in September. The water is at its warmest and crowds are much less. But you should be aware that many of the Boardwalk arcades and amusement parks are not open during the week then and that many towns end their lifeguard programs with the Labor Day weekend, making it "swim at your own risk". September weekends are usually OK for mini golf and rides, but "quieter" does mean quieter in every respect. Stone Harbor/Avalon are great - I go there myself. There is only a tiny boardwalk in Avalon, no major attractions except the beautiful beach. It's a short drive to Wildwood, with a much bigger boardwalk, amusement parks and all the "Shore" stuff. There is usually one weekend in September that is packed because of the "Wings and Water" festival sponsored by the Wetlands Institute - it has wonderful activities and events, but draws a large crowd, which affects restaurants, traffic, parking in town and the like. The date changes from year to year, so you'd have to check and see when it is scheduled for 2004. It takes a bit under 2 hours to get there. It is also near Cape May, but your boys are probably way to young to appreciate that. Have fun, wherever you decide to go! |

Think about driving down to Cape May and all the way onto the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Go through Delaware and Maryland into Virginia, and make a left at Chincoteague Island. Assateague Seashore is one of the most beautiful National Parks I've ever visited, and there are tame ponies for the twins to pet! http://www.nps.gov/asis/index.htm My second favorite is Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. http://www.nps.gov/grsa/ |

We stayed a week in Bethany Beach, Delaware a couple of summers ago. We got a pretty big house for $800/week which is probably a lot less than you'd pay in NJ. Nice, quiet town, very family oriented. Restaurants not so good. Supermarkets not so good. For the big arcade experience, we went one town north to Rehobeth (sp?) Beach. There was plenty of sightseeing in the area, too, like Ocean City, Maryland. And there was the protected place with the wild horses, which we saw from a tour boat. The beaches in DE are very good. Being a native Delawarian, I would recommend Lewes. It's just north of Bethany, Rehoboth and the crowds. The beach is fine, but I never go for the beach. My wife and kid do that. But they have an excellent restaurant in Lewes named: "The Buttery". It's the best food and service in the whole world. And believe me, I know cuz I'm from Delaware... ;-) Tom, go back sometime and try this palce. Curt |
