Suburban closed, Jacqui closed, so who has the tastiest cakes in the area? It's for a first birthday, for adults and kids. (I checked archives and couldn't find any recommendations) |

Our current favorite is Supreme Bakery on Main St in West Orange, just past the intersection with Northfield. |

Costco. It's in the archives. They're really inexpensive ($15!), feed a crowd and have several varieties. If you order 48 hours in advance, they'll decorate/personalize, but if you go there the day you need it, you'll have to choose from the selection at hand. We like the carrot cake with apricot mousse or the chocolate cake with cream cheese filling and buttercream icing. |

Supreme Bakery is the best. Once you've had one of their cakes, you won't want another. |

I like Cait & Abby, haven't tried the other suggestions here. (I really miss Jacqui though.) C&A will custom-decorate as Jacqui used to - bring a napkin or paper plate or whatever with your kid's "theme" on it and they will decorate a cake to match. Of course maybe you won't be using a theme for a 1-year old party. Anyway Cait & Abby's cakes are very good, and I like to buy from M/SO merchants whenever I can.

The bakery in the Shoprite store on Morris Avenue in Union. Great cakes for low prices. Probably similar to Costco. PS - In my experience, they feed many more people than the sign says ... if you are comparing prices, compare sizes rather than number of servings advertised. |

Recently ordered a big tiramisu cake from Cait & Abby--they did a beautiful job, on very short notice, and everyone loved it. It fed way more people than they said, but no one minded taking home leftovers.

thanks for the suggestions. People speak highly about Costco, but is it the price they like, or that the cakes are very good? I worry that, because it's such a huge business, it'll taste mass-produced. Am I wrong?

Well, a few years ago it was an extra special occasion—my cousin was graduating from culinary school so I decided I needed to get something a little more upscale than the Costco sheet cake. I got it at a local bakery that has since closed it's doors (but a place I enjoyed cookies and muffins from). Cost was $40 or more for a 9 inch layer cake, barely decorated. NO ONE liked it. I was waaay to sweet. After that, unless I make it myself (which for a crowd isn't that often) I just get it at Costco. Besides their sheet cakes, various members of my family also like their pies, the frozen cheesecake and the tiramisu, and EVERYONE likes those huge chocolate chunk/white chocolate chunk w/macadamia cookies. Mmmmmm. |

we usually get our cakes from Sorrento in East hanover the qualilty is very good and everyone seems to love their baked goods and homemeade italian bread.I do buy cakes at Costco for my daughters birthday parties for their friends.the cakes at costco are good but can be a little too sweet. The price is great i cant see spending 40.00 on a cake for the kids and have it all go to waste. If you need a cake for a special occasion i would go to a bakery before going to costco. |

TROST'S in Summit on Springfield ave. Great cakes and great snowflake rolls. It's the closest I've found to Prantl's in Shadyside (Pittsburgh).yum. |

For the Italian-style celebration cake, try Conca D'Oro on Stuyvesant Ave. It's on the left about a block before Morris Ave. Their Italian pastries, cookies, canoli's, etc. are great too. |

I agree..Conca D'Oro is great for a grown-up cake with an Italian twist (great cassata cake). Excellent pastry too. I still think though the best all around all purpose bakery within 10-15 minutes is Natale's in Summit. |

C&A makes great cakes, but they are expensive. How about making it yourself, unless you want a wild design, making a cake is just about the easiest thing you can do in a kitchen. |

My wife and I like Sonny Amster's in the Millburn Mall. It might not look like much from the outside, but the cakes and pastries are very good. Not exactly the Nouvelle Patisserie, but very good quality baked goods. |

Are any of these places like Carlo's in Hoboken? I used to love their cakes. I'm looking for a birthday cake with fruit filling (peach). What is my best bet? |

Just make it yourself, I've been making my own cakes sice I was twelve, I even make my own birthday cakes. It's not very hard, and doesn't really take too much time. One of my favorite cakes that I made in the last few years was a sunflower cake (or sunshine on a stick cake), I used a large deep dish pizza pan for the flower, and cut up a couple of rectangular sheetcakes for the petals. Made my own icing and colored it too, put chocolate chips on the flower for seeds and then added the finishing touch, plastic ants, bees, and other assorted insects. Needless to say, it was a big hit for children and adults. |

So, we went with Costco for price and to experiment. My opinion was that the cake is fine and tasty, but heavy on the icing and sweet, as others have said. Definitely not as good as a good bakery's cake. The decorations aren't as sophisticated either. Not sorry I got it but might do it differently next time. It only cost $15 for a whole sheet (too much unless you have over 25 people).thanks for all your suggestions. |

Laur - which kind of cake did you get? I've loved all of the bday cakes i've gotten from costco, but we always get whipped cream icing. I've always wondered about the others. |

we cut buttercream--I don't even think I saw a whipped cream option, though maybe I'm forgetting. Maybe the whipped cream would be less sweet. I didn't dislike it, and people said it was good, but I didn't love it. |
