Gentle Readers, Here's my problem. I hope someone has an answer for me as I can't afford a parking ticket every day of the week. I just started a job in Mid-Town NYC that requires that I take the 8:58am Mid-Town direct train into the city. I can't find a parking place in this town at 8:30+am. Even the lot behind the $3 lot at Maplewood Ave and Baker St is full at that hour. Is there any hope? Does anyone know of a place with parking slots open at that time of day. I fear my only recourse is to take the Jitney. Comments? Thanks, Curt |

Curt - You live in town, right? You can get a parking permit and park on the street near town. There are always spots on Maplewood Ave at that hour. They are a bit of a walk (but no certainly less than 5 minutes). I am sure that there are other spots (up on Oakview and some of the other streets between Valley and Prospect near the train) too. |

Don't even GET me started on this HUGE problem! I need to go into NYC with my toddler son (who refuses to sit in a stroller) once a week at 3pm! I would be willing to go in even hours early if there was one jittney during the day :-( but, as it is now, I would have to leave at rush hour (i.e. small screaming child standing on train with commuters) and return early enough to take the pm jittney. (not likely I could make it that soon) I would pretty much pay almost anything to be able to park in a semi-close spot (BTW - have jittney pass and parking permit) I can NEVER find a spot (take that back - ONCE I found a spot on Maplewood Ave. near Parker...in the pourling rain, in a puddle...remember holding onto toddle, umbrella stroller - one can only hope to use it- umbrella, kid umbrella, diaper bag and purse) It really just sucks. :-( As for finding a spot within a 5 min walk (ok - so with the child, that makes it about 15) PLEASE fill me in!! I never seem to be able to find anything that close in the afternoons :-( Please help with suggestions! This was ok in the Fall, but with this weather and all the ice (HELLO!??? Why do they not shovel the sidewalks to the train station!!!!!! Am I supposed to walk in the middle of the street with my kid?!)I dread days I must take him into the City. ok. enough vent. Thanks. |

You can park in the old ShopRite lot in South Orange (on Vose Ave) and take the train from the South Orange station. If you go in before 10 or 10:30am, you will have to pay $5.00 for the day. It is literally a 1.5 minute walk from the lot to the station.

I think you don't need a permit to park "above" (east of) Prospect St. It's about a ten minute walk from there. Walking back to your car from the train station, you'll be going up a steep hill. Is that kind of walk reasonable for you? Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Can you still park on Maryland Road (next to Jefferson School)? I parked there for a few years and walked to the train -- never once was there not a spot. |

Why not take a cab to the train station once a week? That's what I do if it's not nice enough to walk & I don't want to deal with the car on an occassional basis. |

Kevin, Thanks for the tip! I'm going to try S.Orange (I didn't even know there was a lot back there! Greentree, A cab's a great idea for most...won't really work with kids though...end up dragging the car seat around the city...and then have to deal with having one show up to pick us up. Thanks! |

I've always been able to find parking on Oakview above Valley, indeed, I took the 8:28 the other day (very late for me) and parked there, not even that far up the hill. It is a bit of a walk up the hill at the end of the day but there is always a space, just a question of how far you have to go. For going in a three you might check the Town hall side of Oakview. Its three hour parking but I think it ends at 5 or 6 so if you parked at 3 you would be okay. There are always spots on that side. |

redY67, I think you are mistaken. There are no signs on the streets near me. I doubt there are parking regulations that are not expressed with signs on those streets. I live on Plymouth Ave which has no signs. People use it from time to time for various reasons. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Try parking on Woodland Road, which is one block west of and parallel to Maplewood Avenue. I used to park there to take the train in the mid-morning or afternoon. You should find space there even if there are no spots left on Maplewood Avenue. First try Beach Place, which runs between Maplewood Avenue and Woodland Road, then park on Woodland Road just past Beach Place if Beach Place is full. Your walk to the train from either of these streets will not be too bad. |

There are always spaces available on Oakview Avenue between Valley Street and Prospect Street but mostly at or near the top of the hill. However, the sidewalk heading down Oakview has been an icy mess most mornings lately. redY67 There is no 2 hour parking restriction east of Prospect Street. |

P.S.S, Thanks Prissy Pants! I've just be given a gig working "Part-Time" for Ziff-Davis on E28th and Madison Ave. Web-stuff. Making web pages out of PC Magazine and the like. Vignette, and they even let me use my natural coding abilities sometimes. I like it alot; great people and decent environment. So far. Curt |

Prissy-Pants, We should build an online interactive database of possible parking places in Maplewood based on time of day and other factors. We could map out the town by 1-2-3hour parking zones, permit parking, no restrictions, etc. the user could fill out a form determining their requirements and legal validity and the Db would return the most likely place for them to find a parking place in Maplewood. Whattaya think? A valueable (sp?) piece of IT there, I dare say! Curt |

Not to harsh your mellow Curt, but you're not supposed to park on Maryland Road all day. The best way to find a permit parking spot near the train station is to take the 7:10 (?) or earlier. If you want to sleep late and park near the train get a Vespa. |

There are no signs on Maryland indicating those limitations. Commuters park there all the time. Is there some generalized time limit for street parking in Maplewood? |

While residents there might not like it, you can park on Maryland all day -- I know a few West Orangers and Livinstonites who park there. With a permit I park on Beach Place and get a spot there each morning around 7:30. I did hear that Maryland was going t change and have no all day parking but as of now, you're still good. |

Curt, Maybe great minds think alike. I had a very similar technological idea. I used to work at Bell Labs in Murray Hill (really Berkeley Heights). At times, it was very hard to find parking. My idea was a system that identified your car, notified you of where the nearest available parking spot was, and reserved it for you, but only for about 90 seconds, after which, it was free again. The system would have to detect the emptiness/fullness of each spot, so it could be expensive, but it might be possible with a satellite rather than a sensor at each spot. Curt: The jitney is great if you live close enough to one of the scheduled stops and if your schedule matches the jitney's. You can always catch an earlier jitney (and an earlier train) in the morning but you will need a back up plan for those times when you return home after the last has left the station or on those rare bad weather days when the jitney doesn't run at all. If it would work for you, try picking up a booklet of individual ride tickets and giving it a try before committing to the entire year. Individual rides work out to about 50 cents each. |

Cars on Maplewood Avenue in permit parking rarely extend to Jefferson. If one were to park near Jefferson and take Jefferson down to Dunnell and to the train station, you are probably talking 4-5 minutes. Not bad in any town.

Redy67: Parts of Summit are very narrow and have sidewalks on only one side of the street. The parking limitation there could be due to the inability of thru traffic to get by if cars are parked there all day. In any event, there is no such limitation on Courter between Summit and Prospect, which is much closer for commuters. |

There are bike lockers at the station but I don't know how available they are. Perhaps a nearby merchant who is open early could rent you space for the Vespa for a reasonable fee. |

I have a question about overnight street parking in Maplewood. Is it not permitted? We had guests over the December holidays, and our friend who parked on Prospect street got a ticket. There are no signs saying no parking there! Anyone know the scoop on this? |

There are signs at the entrances to the town regarding no overnight parking-stating hours- i think its 2am to 6am. You could always call the police dept. if someone needs to leave the car overnight on the street. They usually waive it over the holidays though. |

There are similar signs at the entrances to just about every town. Yes, it's 2am to 6am in Maypullwood, as it is in most towns. I hear you can call the police and notify them that a guest will park on your street. This may cost, but less than a ticket. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

PP -there is no fee if you let MPD know about your overnight guests ahead of time. The usually only blanket-waive on the holiday itself. Just call & give the car description & plate number. I don't think they'd allow it for more than a night or so, tho. |
