I am looking to rip out the wall to wall on my staircase and install a new banister. Anyone ever have a nice banister (railing) made?

Very hard to find a contractor who does custom work on banisters. Look for a woodworker/cabinet maker in the book. We found ours by calling the banister manufacturers and asking for installers. Lucked out and found a good guy. Many of them are just salesmen. If you have an older house, the new 'kit' fixtures will likely be too big to fit (they are too wide, and make the steps too narrow - stairs in new houses are much wider than old houses). After months of searching we found someone we were comfortable with. Very committed to making our ideas work, and offered tons of advice and ideas. I live in one of the few contemporary houses in Maplewood, so ours is not a traditional wood banister - it is aluminum and maple *what other wood to use in maplewood*. Anyway, PL me and I will send his name. Be warned, banisters are expensive. |

You can go to Jaeger Lumber and look through the JL Smith bannister catalog, pick out the stuff you need (find out the codes first and consult with staff there) and then find a carpenter to put it in. Capenter can specify the quantities and make sure he has all the connectors and doo-hickeys. We did roughly that for our rail, but I played the role of the carpenter (and it isn't done, and may never be, but at least we have a lot of holes in the floor and we saved some money - we hope the baby doesn't crawl too soon or we'll need to get a landing net). |

While we're at it, anyone know of someone who can tighten newels? |

I was looking for an interesting railing for a 6' staircase between 2 walls in my entryway (so I was looking for one that attaches to a wall, not to the stairs). I ended up getting a 2" solid wood curtain rod that has bamboo-like carvings, and I put some cool finials on the ends. However, I guess that won't help you much if you want a bannister that attaches to the stairs not the wall. |
