Okay, we're flying with two children to San Francisco this weekend. Ultimate destination is Lake Tahoe. After we arrive in SF, we'd like to drive part of the way to LT, spend the night, then continue on to LT the following day. Any suggestions about a good midway stop where, perhaps, there is something to do?

I agree. Sacramento is a good 1/2 way point. There used to be a great train museum there that may be worth a quick stop. Here's a link: http://www.csrmf.org/

YOSEMITE!! The drive can be a little hairy (especially in the winter), but it's worth seeing the park, even for just 1 night.
