There is apparently a longtime Polish community in Union. There is a large Polish meat market on its Main Street, not all that far from the Union Sevenplex movie theater. But that's all I know.

If you head up Parker Avenue toward Newark, you'll end at Sanford Avenue. Take a right there and go about a block. There's a little row of shops, on the right hand side, and one of them is a Polish deli/market. I can't recall the name of it, but we bought some poppy seed roll there recently, and it was quite good. |

Really, NRL? How have I missed that? I was just over there today. What is the name? And what makes it Polish?

Olympic Market on 40th Street in Irvington. The store is on a corner and they have their own parking lot across the street. Best kielbasi! |

In the Lake Hiawatha section of Parsippanny (I know, a little out of the way, but it's worth the trip!) there is a wonderful Polish deli/butcher/grocery that serves delicious hot food to go -- pierogies, kielbasa & kraut, stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, schnitzel, homemade soups -- for ridulously cheap prices. Like, $5 for a complete meal. I think it's called Taste of Europe, or something like that; we have their menu on the fridge at home, if anyone needs specifics. |

Thanks, millie. I've been looking for that place ever since a friend who is Polish and used to live in South Orange, told me about it a few months ago. She can never remember the name and I can never remember how to find it. So, does anyone know what it is called? Anyway, it had her seal of approval. |

Thanks to all for your suggestions. We tried two places and the meal was wonderful. We tried J&D Polish Mini Market at 643 Chestnut in Union (on the other side of the Garden State). It seemed like the real polish deli. Every shelf, nook and crany was filled with foods with Polish labels. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. She put together some foods for us, including great mushroom perogi. The hams and meats looked great, too. We also tried Polish Meats & Provisions here on Springfield near Riccardi. They are more wholesale (for a place in Garfield) than retail. The place is not very welcoming for walk-ins. However, the people are very nice and will sell you whatever they just made. We had the fresh keilbasi, and it was truly good. Thanks again. |
