i just visited marshall school for a valentine celebration. i was horrified to walk down a hallway with strategically placed garbadge cans to catch the water from the leaking ceiling.

i asked staff about the leakage. i was told that there is a whole in the roof, the carpets are stained, several classrooms smell and dozens of kids have been relocated to other classrooms.
i was also told that the BOE is not responding to their requests for assistance.

can anyone offer any factual information on what is happening at marshall?

shestheone et al - not responding.. what exactly does that mean... is there a weather issue (too wet, too cold) before the problem can be addressed? Obviously it's not something that will just go away or fix itself - BOE ignoring the problem doesn't sound logical.

That said.. if it were MY child's school and the classroom smelled (which to me signals a health hazzard), I'd be calling the EPA and my child would be staying home until the problem was addressed to my satisfaction.

There's power in numbers - get your parents and staff together and organize.. be heard! call the papers!

Similar problems at Tuscan. Three ceiling collapses in the last few weeks, but the District seems to have done some initial repairs. Two of the three collapses were in part of the building remodeled in the mid-90s. Other rooms have had carpets soaked by leaking sinks or bathrooms, and the carpets have not been replaced. Many, many rooms have peeling, flaking paint and there are holes in the walls on the first and second floor which are large enough to put your entire hand or foot through.

The District keeps saying "no money", but did seem to find money for Central Office needs and bonuses. It is quite discouraging.

Glen Ridge has an interesting approach to some similar issues:

Group finds new ways to fund schools
Thursday, February 12, 2004

BY ELIZABETH MOORE
Star-Ledger Staff

... Sponsoring the new adult school is a group of volunteers who sit on the Alternative Funding
Committee of the Glen Ridge Board of Education. The committee's mission is to find creative
ways to raise money to pay for needed capital improvements at the schools that have not
been funded by the school district's budget....

The "scrip" idea has been used successfully by houses of worship for many years. It certainly should be explored.

My recollection is that a couple of years ago mention was made by a BOE member of finding sources of alternative funding. Was an alternative funding committee ever established as Glen Ridge has done?

From the Marshall PTA:

According to Prin. Allen and to the Administration, the leaking roof in question at Marshall is scheduled to be replaced once weather conditions permit.

I would urge people to call a Principal or PTA representative rather than pass on misinformation via Maplewoodonline.

my intention was not to muckrake. i am looking for factual information on the situation at marshall as i learned about it at the end of the day before a holiday week.

do you know how long these conditions have existed? and what weather conditions will permit the repair? (in other words, a timeframe?)

shestheone:

I would ask that you or any other Marshall parent with questions or concerns contact either Karen Hamel (973-761-0689) or Suzanne Durney
(973-763-8149), co-Presidents of the PTA Board, directly. I know that they are in frequent touch with Principal Allen and will be receiving an update about the weather conditions which have made repair impossible to date and when repairs are now expected to take place.

Hope this helps.

Why is this a PTA matter? What is their connection to the leaky roof? The parent should speak directly to the principal.

Breal, of course any parent should feel free to contact the Principal in regard to any question or concern. The suggestion to contact the PTA Presidents at Marshall was not intended to keep anyone who so wishes from seeking out the Principal directly.

At the same time, the role of the PTA is to help parents and guardians and address any issues or concerns. Ms. Allen meets frequently with the PTA Presidents and provides frequent updates on a variety of matters, including when the roof will be repaired.

why don't you all just leave it to the administration and find something to do that no one is getting paid to do?
