I can't find much on the web. Is it too far to commute from there to downtown Manhattan? Just curious. This winter is making me long for some beach.

I think it would be a long trip. I don't think there is any public transportation from there to downtown. The directions on this site: http://www.cityisland.com/ say 6 train to last stop then a bus. That is a looong trip. Its also not any warmer there. Its sort of a weird little enclave, but a fun trip in the summer. Some great clamshacks at the end of the island. |

I have a friend who grew up on City Island and used to commute downtown. She took the bus to the subway (it was definitely over an hour, but she usually got a seat on the subway). I think that there are express buses (maybe not exactly from City Island, but somewhere nearby). City Island is very nice. There were parts that felt like it was a shore town (but it's been almost 20 years since I've been there, so I can't say that it's still the same). |

I used to sail out of CI. There are express buses to and from the Island. At about 3:30 p.m., it would take me just about an hour to get from 24th & Madison to the Island. Never tried it at rush hour. Beware. If the Bridge gets stuck, and it does, there's no way on or off the Island other than boat. Its not a place I would recommend for its beaches. Good Luck, TomR. |

YUK. We drove out there to check it out; Tom is right about the beaches. I was feeling water deprived and found out that even houses that sell for 1 mill only have 4 or 5 thousand dollar taxes. I was tempted to just go look. The town has potential, like if 100 of us Maplewoodians moved in and fixed up, but that's not happening. People live there all their lives until they die so real estate doesn't open up much. Most of the homes are small fisherman’s houses and seem over priced. The school report for the one elementary school was surprisingly good; I think the best in NYC (since it's considered part of NYC). But it is still not as good as ours in some ways and equal in others. There are NO yards. Lots of chain link fencing and boatyards. Kind of an interesting place but not to move to and does not compare to home. It felt so good to drive into town and into my own driveway. I guess I have to do that once in a while to get rid of winter doldrums, but there's no place like home. And the commute would have been more convoluted and added another 20 min each way (to answer my own original question.)

If you want private house + beach + some sense of community within the boundaries of NYC try looking in some of the communities on the South Shore of Long Island (Brooklyn or Queens). Trip to Manhattan from some of these communities is pretty convenient. |
