Tom: I'm really sorry to learn about your troubles. I hope everything goes well. Art: Bernie and I will try to make the meeting tonight. I wish we could be as optimistic as you are about the likelihood of something actually being accomplished this evening. Now, can we please get back to the discussion at hand before someone sites this thread drift as a pet peeve of theirs? |

Tom, Thanks again for your input. Really that's all it takes, just a few comments on line to respond one way or the other to the issues facing all of us in the community... Trust me, I know very few people have the time as I do, but just a word of encouragement now and again would be nice. If anyone can't make it, I will be happy to bring their message for or against any issue, regardless of my personal feelings on the matter. I feel it's all about fairness is dealing. What's best for the town as a whole? I really don't know the answer, but I'm doing the best I know how to find out! BTW, please give my best wishes to your wife for me, and let us know if and when she is ready for visitors. I would love to come over to see all of you guys again when she feels up to it. |

Some more thread hikage: Q: You are sitting behind the wheel in a car keeping a constant speed, on your left side there is an abyss. On your right side you have a fire engine and it keeps the same speed as you. In front of you runs a pig, larger than your car. A helicopter is following you, at ground level. Both the helicopter and the pig are keeping the same speed as you. What will you need to do to be able to stop? A: Get out of the car, step down from the merry-go-round and leave your seat to someone younger. A merry-go-round is primarily for small children. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Tom, sorry to hear of your troubles also. Where do you find time to do all this posting? As far as the joggers, even if I brake suddenly, a school bus can ram me from behind and kill us all, God forbid, even at 25 MPH. The answer is that joggers should just take it up to Wyoming for everyone's safety. You can't argue that, and if you do, well then you get the last word. |

Thanks for your sympathy, gemini. I do not advocate sudden braking just to get a point across to tailgaters. It's tempting, but inviting harm is not good for anyone. With that said, I do whatever I can to get tailgaters to stop tailgating. My measures vary with the conditions. But swerving into oncoming traffic sounds like a sure way to invite a collision, whereas sudden braking, while scary, is not a guarantee that you'll be rear-ended. Well, I suppose there are cases where you look behind, realize that if you brake to avoid a hazard, you'll be rammed, then look ahead to the left and realize the left (oncoming) lane is empty, then swerving is safer than braking. But if it's a toss-up, then braking is the correct response. The trouble is, I've seen drivers act as if staying in motion is the prime directive, whereas stopping is the best thing to do. If fear of being rear-ended occupies a big portion of your attention, you're probably doing something wrong. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

If I wanted to read about Tom Reingold's personal life I would go to reingoldonline.com. Rather, I have chosen maplewoodonline.com, as I have since 1998. Dave, might it be possible to set up a section where people can post all the personal information they want the world to know and the rest of us don't have to read about it repeatedly? Las’s point is that the thread drift is huge and depressing. I don’t read MOL to hear how difficult Toms life is. I read it to listen to what the towns have to say. |

I agree with las. Oh and Tom, when jogging on Ridgewood, do motorists a favor and keep your ass on the sidewalk. Roads are for vehicles, sidewalks for pedestrians. |

It's OK, folks. I did go too far today, and I apologize for that. Clearly, getting too detailed about one's personal life is not part of the culture here. Thanks for your compassion, though, to those who offered it. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Wow, it's gotten kind of chilly in here all of a sudden. Tom, all the best to your family. You know, ajc asked Tom directly if he would come to his meeting tonight. To some degree, if somebody asks you a direct question in a public forum, you have to respond. And if Tom had said he was busy watching ER reruns or whatever, I suspect you wouldn't have minded. But somebody would have accused him of being apathetic - somebody else would have started attacking people for being lazy - etc. It would have been the icy sidewalks thing all over again. The culture is what we make it here. I don't think there are such strong rules. I like the personal approach a lot better. When we're human, I think we're a lot nicer to each other. Or, so I would have thought. |

The persona is political. Most of the hot-headed debate in the Soapboxes and elsewhere probably has a personal dimension, just some would like to pretend they are objective intellectuals arguing from some higher place. Yeah, right. Good luck, Tom. Very hard stuff. |

One of the things I have come to admire about the MOL Community is our ability to support each other during times of difficulty. It is a high compliment to all of us that Tom felt comfortable enough in this forum to share what are deeply personal feelings. He has earned our help, not our criticism.

When I become Dictator of Maplewood I am going to ban people jogging with Walkmen. A few years ago, middle of the morning, sunny, on Ridgewood Road (fka Grub Street) a guy was jogging southbound listening to his tunes and swerved over to get to the other side of the street. I missed him by about two inches. He then started cursing at me for speeding. LOL |

Neighbors who park their cars in front of your house while the space in front of their own homes remains empty. I've never seen this anywhere else; I think it's another one of those weird NJ things... a PS agreed on the non-reflective street signs...bizarre. I've got to believe this causes more than a few rear-enders. |

Tom-- Sorry to hear about your troubles. You should not apologize for your post, it should be everyone who blasted you apologizing. I will say a prayer for your family. On another note about sudden braking, I had a guy on Route 22 that did that to me. Apparently when I merged on to 22, I got in front of this guy, and he didn't like me taking his "rightful" space. So he sped by me, cut me off and slammed on his brakes. I barely could stop in time. Sorry, I got into his space, but he almost caused a horrific accident that could have seriously injured a lot of people, including my 1 and 3 year old. |

I agree with redY67 - Tom contributes so much helpful information and humor to this message board - he has the right to share the unfunny stuff too & get support from his community. My best to you & yours, Tom. Further, people get involved in their community & contribute in their own ways...sometimes our family commitments, interest/apptitude and life get in the way of being active in the same ways that others (who are perhaps at differnt points in life, with differnt responsibilities) choose to- this does not make us apathetic. I appreciate those who give their time to serve on town council - it's important stuff, but not more important than caring for one's family members in need. |

Just responding to Library Lady: I use my own name when posting, and always have through many years of being involved in online communities. Not sure why - I'm just not very good at assuming an alter ego I guess. Or maybe I'm not comfortable distilling my "essence" or personality into a cute screen name. It seems like the comics on the office door - a shorthand way to tell the world what you're all about, and I've never felt that the essence of a person can be conveyed that way. Whatever. On the other hand my husband has been at this kind of thing longer than me, and he always uses a screen name. He has a really deep need for maintaining his privacy online and I can't say I blame him. (he posts here but very infrequently. He has a very cute screen name, which suits him perfectly - although it suits him like a shirt, i.e. it looks good on him but it isn't him, if you know what I mean?) I think that's OK, as long as you don't use your anonymity as an excuse to act like a jerk online. There are a few out there who are jerky as kind of a sideshow - which has some degree of entertainment value and it doesn't seem to get "serious" very often. But the ones who get nasty in a very unfunny way - they bug the hell out of me. So I'd take your pet peeve and change it for myself to: People who hide behind their anonymity. |

The driving experience in the area is a pity. I'm often on Valley St in Union. The intersections at Millburn Ave and at Vauxhall Rd are wide so you can go straight or turn from either of two lanes. Often, people pull up beside me from behind solely to pass me. I remember learning in first grade that it's not polite to cut ahead of someone in line. I wish others remembered, too. This happened to me twice on Springfield Ave in Maplewood yesterday, too. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing
