It is our wedding anniversary on Sunday and my mother is coming to babysit for the first time in our son's 4 and a half years of life (let's not get into that). We haven't been out in a long time and would like to have a casual evening of dinner and a movie. We've settled on the movie - "Something's Gotta Give", which is playing in East Hanover. Now we need to decide about dinner. We're thinking about Penang, the Malaysian restaurant on Rt. 10. We also love Korean food, but the one restaurant in the area, Keo-Ku, is not on Rt. 10 as I thought, but on Rt. 46 in Parsippany. Has anyone eaten at either of these restaurants? Do you recommend them? Any other ideas? Is there a good sushi place near there? Thanks. |

I've eaten at Penang and wasn't particularly impressed. For Chinese, Mr. Chu's (just a bit farther west on Rt. 10 directly across from Novartis). Linen tablecloths, well-prepared food, nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. 973-887-7555 If you're willing to go about 10 minutes further west on Rt. 10, you'll find Nikko's, which has fabulous sushi. Reasonably nice atmosphere, etc. It's wise to call for reservations there (973-428-0787).

Thanks, Barb. Maybe we'll try Nikko's. Is it very expensive? |

It's a bit more than the average sushi place, but not ridiculous. You'll need to do a U turn to get to it if you're heading west. Then, enter the parking lot just past the restaurant itself. Hope you have fun! |

There's also a Bill and Harry's (not affiliated with our local take-out) on Route 10 on the eastbound side. We ate there once and were quite happy. If you have about 10 extra minutes you can take Ridgefield Ave (the light at Novartis Pharmaceuticals immediately west of the theater) into Madison (past Florham Park) and find (at least) two really nice Chinese restaurants. Shanghai Jazz and Seasons (Four Seasons?), the former on Main Street on your left about two blocks down from the end of Ridgedale Ave and the second on Central Ave, I think. Cathy |

I have to say that I am crazy about Penang--my favorite NJ Asian restaurant by far. It's casual/family style, but I think the food is outstanding. Never had a bad meal there. |

I hope Cathy meant RidgeDALE Avenue, not RidgeFIELD Ave. If I'm mistaken, and there really is a Ridgefield Avenue, please forgive me. I also found Penang to be pretty good, especially during Chinese New Year. |

Thanks, all, for your suggestions. I'll report back once we decide and add my two cents about wherever we end up going. |

I just realized that I never reported back. We ended up going to East Tokyo on Rt. 10 Eastbound side (just west of the movie theater in East Hanover) due to time constraints, since we could walk there from the theater. We had sushi and I'd give it a B. Not bad, but certainly not wow. I also didn't care for the decor. The restaurant just didn't have a good feeling to me, and it seemed somewhat noisy, even though there were few patrons while we were there due to a slightly early dinner hour. The sushi was served on this enormous wooden boat, which I found kitschy, overwhelming on the table and cause for wonder about just exactly how they clean that thing. So, all in all, I can't say that I'd go back there. From what I've been reading here, it seems like Monster sushi is the place to try the next time we venture out. |

spw, you're right, it was RidgeDALE. I should know better, my high school was on that street! Oh well. Thanks for the correction. Hope I didn't lead anyone astray! Cathy |
