jam,

depending on what you are looking for i have two suggestions: 1. i have had curtains made at the tailor at gleasons cleaners. prompt. perfect and on time. 2. i have also had window treatments made at francesca's european tailoring. takes longer but is equally as well done.

i supply the fabric and design. they make the treatments. if you are looking for more assistance, try the local 'decorating den'

As far as I know, the lady from the Maplewood Decorating Den has retired, if that's the decorating den you mean. She gave the business up a couple of years ago.

I've used an 'independent' designer/seamstress, Sally Thomas (she is probably in the book), whose name I found in the MOL main page classifieds last year. She did a great job for us, and her price was reasonable.

Expo does this, but it depends on how much you plan on spending. If you plan on spending more than $500, it's worth it. They make you pay a $100 retainer for a designer, but you get it back if you spend at least $500. They have the same fabrics as other places (eg., Calico Corners), and it's much cheaper. They get discounts on fabrics as designers as well, so it turns out cheaper for you as well. I can recommend one of their designers who worked with us. Her name is Veronica.

I have no personal experience and no idea about prices, but one of the items in the recent Seth Boyden auction was a window treatment service by Mary Beth Zichelli of Custom Creations, so that might be someone else to try.

My friend recently purchased window treatments through Costco. They are beautiful, and the designer was easy to work with.

I used Majestic Interiors (corner of Ridgewood and Millburn ave, above Jewelers). I picked out a silk (Robert Allen silks) at Expo and got a quote. When I had Majestic come out, I asked for the same fabric and treatment. It ended up being over 100 less a window for lined balloon shades. His price included installation. I love them.
We also had him do wood blinds in our Maplewood room, he beat the cost of Smith & Noble (the buy direct place) and also included installation (Smith & Noble you hang yourself).
I suggest calling him for a quote, he'll come to you and bring fabric books.
Also, you can check out www.smithandnoble.com just to see their treatments, too.

I strongly recommed Mary Beth Zichelli for window treatments! I was unsure of what I wanted for my living room and dining room. Mary Beth came to my home and offered several very helpful suggestions. She brought fabric swatches with her, and left them for a few days so I could share them with my husband and consider them. Brought back more samples to consider later, after actually seeing our home. Mary Beth takes all measurements and does the installation herself. The windows look beautiful - I have received so many compliments from friends and family. The workmanship is just what you'd expect - fully lined and great attention to detail. Mary Beth's website is www.customcreationsnj.com.

P.S. While shopping in Expo one day I wandered through the window treatment area. Mary Beth's prices were in line with Expo's.
