My husband is sick and tired of taking off his shoes at the airport because the metal in his shoes' shanks sets off the metal detector when he passes through security. He has heard that some shoe manufacturers have started using fiberglass as a substitute for metal in their shoes' shanks. Does anyone know where in the area I can find good quality men's dress shoes which are made with fiberglass or some other non-metal shank? |

I don't think it matters - most security checks now require everyone to remove their shoes and put thru the xray. At least that's been my experience. I just take my shoes off the same way I take my lap top out. |

They don't usually make you take sneakers off. At least that has been my experience on several trips in the last year or so. |

It depends on the threat level of the airport your at. Shoes always have to come off even if they don’t set off the metal detector, sometimes you have to take off sneakers. I have travel shoes that slide on and off easily, laptop comes out of the bag, keys, wallet and watch in the bag, cell phone in hand ready to turn on. What a pain. |

Why is it when traveling in Europe they don't ask for you to remove your shoes? |

Dressy loafers work for me. The ones with the tassles. |

I don't fly too often, but the last few times I have, I've set off the metal detectors with all my jewelry. |

Shh, doesn't your post belong in the body piercing thread over in Soapbox? A couple of years ago I was traveling with a woman co-worker who got caught at security because her, uhm, foundation garment had metal stays in it. Hey, as she said red faced as she swore me to secrecy, age, gravity and spitting out three kids, the smallest of which was 91/2 pounds takes its toll. sorry, couldn't resist |

SAC: I've suggested sneakers but the simple canvas (old Keds) type don't give his feet enough support and the athletic shoe type sneakers also have metal shanks. BobK: He isn't looking for a shoe which is easier to remove. He is looking for a shoe he doesn't have to remove at all. Friends who use the same airports he does have told him that fiberglass shanks will work for the security check points he regularly has to pass through. The goal of the moment is to find a supplier of such shoes, whose shoes are well made and will give his feet firm support. Because he generally goes directly from the airport to his first business meeting of the day and because he firmly believes that men attending business meetings should wear dress shoes, he is specifically looking for shoes which go well with a business suit. |

Last time I checked I believe GQ and Esquire, etal approved of a nice pair of dress loafers for business wear. |

bobk: This isn't the soapbox and I am not looking to debate fashion or etiquette with you (or anyone else on this board). The question on the table is where to obtain suitable shoes which offer good foot support and have non-metal shanks. Can you recommend such a place?

I did a quick search for "fiberglass shanks" on the MSN webbrowser. All I really saw were clogs and workboots by Wolverine. Possibly Google would do better. I would also suggest visiting the shoe store (Futters?) on Millburn Avenue in Millburn because my guess is that they are very knowledgeable about shoes since this is a multi-generation family owned business. Sorry for going off subject. |

bobk: Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely give Futters a call. I was also thinking of calling Shoe Gallery in Elizabeth since they have proven to be very knowledgeable in the past. I was hoping with all of the travelers on MOL that someone might happen to know the answer to this question and save me some spade work. Thanks again. Joan |
