Never been to Ireland, eh? The kids don't bother me - there were quite a few this afternoon - most were connected to the band members in some way. For the most part, they were very well behaved.

Ah Jaysus, SoOrLady, but you're grand.

(How dare children attempt to share space with the rest of us. None of us started out that young, surely.)

Now that's a proper pub!

Went to dinner there last night early enough to catch the live band! What a pleasant experience! An announcement was made that some big entertainers were scheduled to appear during January and February, including some from Riverdance.
Yes, there were babes in arms and tots around, but that is what we have experienced in pubs in Ireland. Pubs are family-oriented meeting places over there. Didn't note any kids after 7:30 though.
I think the separation from the bar crowd works very well.

Went to the Gate for lunch today and have to say Im disappointed. After reading all the fine reviews on this board I was ready to love it. Sadly it just should never take more than 30 minutes for a burger and an order of fish and chips. Especially when we sat down there were maybe half a dozen deuces seated. Some already eating. The kitchen was painfully slow and the food....ordinary. The shephards pie looked appetizing, but I start at the pub burger then move across the menu. Our waitress, while pleasant enough was not particularly good. I will try again cause as Mr. Rheingold says.. you cannot make a line from a single dot. But at first blush, while a comfortable and friendly place, not anywhere I would wait for a table for, seeing as how I dont drink.

I am going to the Pub tonight for Dinner with my wife and another Maplewood couple. Since the Pub opened in August I have been there almost two dozen times, and have never been seriously disappointed. In fact, I have been often delighted by the quality of the food and drink, the service, the chit chat with the owners and employees, and the general ambiance. And no one can beat the quality of those who frequent the Gate. Tonight I will be ordering beef, but for various and sundry reasons you might want to try the fish.

PS to Dave, Art, and others to whom I owe a drink: come on down!

Duncan, sorry you were disappointed. I concur with Ed that I've never been seriously disappointed... however, you are right - the service is very slow - very, very slow.

Normally, we don't mind - we don't go to the Gate for a "quick bite" - nor do we go there for gourmet food and the upscale service that accompanies the price at such an establishment.

We go to The Gate to relax, enjoy some good food (that always arrives piping hot) and the company of whatever neighbor we happen to run into.

And frankly with so few customers in the place as were there yesterday, that is inexcusable. As an actor, I did many MANY years in the food service industry at many levels from diner to fine dining.. and there is nothing that drives customers away faster than slow service, except perhaps food poisoning. I will ABSOLUTELY be back because I think it is a great addition to the village. I will just not go there when I am hungry.

I agree, the service is quite slow - from placing an order (waiting for the wait staff to arrive) to getting the food, and even waiting for the check. The food is good (I've only had the burgers) but not nearly good enough to warrant the excessive wait, and the higher price.

Finally made it to the pub. Food was good...service a little on the slow side but not too bad. Owner is a very nice guy. I wish they would get a bigger menu though.....not much of a selection. Could use some more munchies/appetizers.....potato skins, mozz stix, etc....in case you want to have a drink and just pick at the bar....Overall a good experience.

i haven't been to The Gate too many times (i actually prefer the diviness of bunny's) but each time i've been, the food has been good and the service attentive... my only wish/complaint is, if they're going to charge me nyc prices for beer that comes in tiny glasses, then at least give me my 3rd beer on the house. i tip well enough to deserve it.

The beers are pint sized, 16 ounces. The glasses look smaller, I know, but they are true pints. Not that I'd look a gift beer in the mouth, mind you . . .

Do they serve later on Fridays and Saturdays than on other nights? That might make sense, but to keep a kitchen open later every night (and keep it staffed and keep it from being cleaned earlier, which means keeping it staffed even later) probably isnt worth the expense compared to what they would take in in food sales.

I'm hoping to sneak out of work early and surprise my husband by doing all the shoveling so that we can go to the pub and get steaks -- yum.

My boyfriend and I went their yesterday, pre superbowl. Although there was barely anyone there, it was great service and good food. My boyfriend had the burger with rashers & cheddar and I had fish & chips. Burger was great, we agreed it was better than Gaslight. Fish was good, a bit greasey. My fries were homestyle, my favorite, but his fries were like McDonald's style and not as good.

Overall, live the decor and fireplace. Definitely going back again!

Went to the Gate for dinner last nite , several things seem to have become permanent, you can't get a table , the 3 to 4 people that smoke ruin it for everyone else , the 7 or 8 year old kid in PJs who apparently lives in the bar area , & the middle age drunk who just wants to bore the s&*t out of everyone. The barkeeps always say that they cut him off a 1/2 hour ago. The food is very good , the staff is friendly & they pour a nice drink. I'm just ranting.
