I'm considering signing up for the parent/tot gymnastics class at the YMCA - can anybody who has taken this or similar classes at the Y let me know their thoughts on the class?

TIA

My child has not attended it (but she does go to the Y). I have heard that it is ok for a parent/tot class for music and playing, but if you are looking for real gymnastics (as much as a 2 year old can do) it is not great. That being said I might be signing her up for the next level of non-parent gymnastics class which would happen during her daycare hours.

We did take a parent/child gymnastics class at the little gym in Livingston (off rt 10) which was WONDERFUL. They really work on enhancing listening skills and the kids are allowed full use of the gymnastics equipment (which is basically scaled down versions of the real thing). Plus it is fun! The teachers are great too. It is MUCH more expensive than the Y though. But you can take a free class to see if you like it. We are now signed up for the 3-and-over non-parent class and if we can swing it I will sign baby sister up as well once she can walk.

My son (almost 5) has been in the 4-5 year old gymnastics class at the Y since September and he loves it. He is in daycare there and they take him from class so I have never been but every week he is ready to show some new thing he has learned (jumping jacks, stretches, summersaults, backward rolls, varous jumps and positions (tuck jump, straddle jump, pike jump)). Its been great for him and has actually changed the way he moves.

For the price ($80) the parent/tot at the Y is good value. It's open play so its up to you to get the most out of it. It may not be as sparkling new as a Gymboree but I don't think my 21 month old notices. They can crawl through tunnels, jump on a mini trampoline, walk the beam, play with balls, there's a slide and blocks and lego and then we have circle time to sing a few songs. They get a hand stamp too.

The Library does open storytime on a Friday which is good too for families on a budget! Its free!
