I have researched this in the attic but I can't find a clear answer. My question is if you get Direct TV do you still have to pay Comcast for the cable? I read somewhere that you did but others tell me no..can anyone clarify>

No, it is seperate from cable. The only reason you would have to pay the cable company is if you used them for your internet, but I'm pretty sure you could order your internet through DirectTV

You can get DSL through DirectTV but I think it is not as fast as a cable modem. And I am pretty sure getting a comcast cable modem is more expensive if you have DirectTV than if you have cable.

We have DirectTV and would never go back to cable. It is cheaper for the same if not more channels, better picture quality and reception, and better customer service. And Tivo with DirectTV rocks.

Can you tell we watch a bit too much TV?

I have comcast internet service and DirecTv. Cable internet service is around $50 and the DirecTv bill runs about $75. As others have said, you do not need cable to get DirecTv, they will run the cable for you.

You can get Internet access from something called DirectWav but it is very expensive. When I looked into it the price for the equipment was around $500-600. We are very happy with our set up.

We have Direct TV / Tivo and then have DSL thru our phone service. It was less than having a Comcast cable modem. Our DSL is fast and I have never had a problem with it.

Our Direct TV with Tivo is around 75/month and the phone (including all local, long distance and toll calls) and DSL combined is around 85/month.

I just checked out http://www.directv.com and saw that I can get a so-called basic package "TOTAL CHOICE® PLUS with Local Channels" for only $40 a month. There is one drawback: I can't get the Maplewood public service channel. Still, this is appealing. I have an introductory rate with Comcast cable TV service. I don't remember what the rate will go up to, but I think I'll switch when it does.

To my mind, cable modem internet service is better than DSL but not enough to justify the cost difference.

Comcast's web site does not let you browse through their offerings. Bad!

I took a look too and noticed that YES is only availible as part of a premium package. Brings it up to about what my cable is, though with a few more channels. (YES is a must for me)

We are having DirectTV with Tivo installed in our house this weekend (switching from Dish Network), and here is the deal we got through Best Buy:

free sattelite dish
free tuners for three television sets (two regular, one with Tivo)
free installation of the system

Our monthly service will cost:
$39 for 100+ basic cable channels plus all local channels (including fox, upn, wb, and pbs but not local access cable channels)
plus $5 each for our two "extra" receivers
plus $5 for our Tivo service
For a total of $54/month.

If we add HBO, which I want to do but my husband is resistant, it will be $11 or $12 extra a month for several (4 or 5?) HBO channels, and I believe they're running a promotion where you get the first three months free with a one-year commitment.

There is a direct tv bulletin board out there (not sure of the address) that will alert you to specials, eg. 3 months free HBO, etc. My husband checks whenever our current package is set to expire and we can usually get something for nothing. We had premium service (which is I think around $90) for six months and only paid for HBO. Now we have Showtime free.
