Why buy a purebred dog when so many are in shelters? Check out local shelters and rescue organizations.

Check the internet for collie rescues. They are very picky about matching the proper dog with the proper owner. Might be a wait but any good breeder will have a wait too. And you will feel better about adopting a dog that needs a home. Also try www.petfinder.org which links to shelters all over the country and you can select by the (primary) breed of the dog. Tons of puppies as well as older (already housetrained!) dogs.

We have 2 pugs, one of whom is from a pug rescue, and we got her at 8 months old. Feels great to "save" a life AND get the breed you want if you are picky about that sort of thing.

I don't know of any breeders but if you go to a local dog show (again check the internet or maybe the AKC) you can probably meet some there. That is how we got our first pug and how my MIL got her shelties.

Hope you are prepared for lots of vaccuming! Good luck!

P.S. My best advice...however you get your dog (hopefully through adoption) train him/her well. We did not train our pugs well and as a result have a hard time having playdates for my kids at our house as our dogs are "overly affectionate".

Give this website a shot. You don't have to enter your email it will still search.

Although adoption is a great idea some people want show dogs.

Wenyn: beleive it or not, collies don't shed like you think, I have had one for the last nine years, and we are going to get her a playmate.

grw-

Along the lines of going to shows to talk to owners/potential breeders, there's a big breed show, all breeds, this weekend at the Meadowlands, I think. It was listed as a Secaucus address. It may be a place to start to make some connections.

Privateline me, if you want more details.

grw, glad to hear collies don't shed too much. My husband grew up with shelties who shed like crazy. His mom vaccuumed every day! And my pugs although short haired turn my red carpet "fawn" within a matter of days.

I've been to the show Ceder is talking about, it is at the Meadowlands convention center and is a good size to see lots of breeders who are accessable to talk about their dogs.

Good luck!
