Was wondering what could be causing the following symptoms with my boiler. Its approx 25 years old, and seems to be working great. In the last month or so, it has been exuding some odd behavior. I will hear it come on, run for a while, stop, and immediately start again. Almost like a hiccup behavior. Almost as if it is shorting out for a split second and coming back on. Before I worry about the electrical connection, is this symptomatic of any other boiler related problems? |

Could be water in the tank, is your tank underground? We had an underground tank and this happened often, finally the water would get too high and we had to drain off the water. We had this problem last spring, turned out we had multiple holes. Good thing for tank insurance. |

Yes, the tank is underground. When you say you had to drain off the water, do you mean your oil co. came out and did that, or were you able to do it yourself? But what is the explanation of the stopping and starting? |

We had a tank cleaning company do it, but finally had to remove the tank removed. You can do it yourself, but it is best to have them do it because they can dispose of the water/oil. Your oil company can "stick" the tank to determine if you have water and how much. Not sure of that start and stop. Could be a dirty oil filter or pump problem. |

Are you sure that the boiler water level is correct? If this is a steam system and the water level is low the Low Water Cut out can be doing this. If you have an auto fill system, perhaps it has failed. Check you sight glass and the water level should be 1/2 to 3/4 of the tube. Never be afraid to try something new. Yes, i frequently check the water level (it is a steam system), and even drain the system fairly often. The water level stays pretty constantly at 1/2 full. Perhaps this really is a short in the electrical? If so, what are the electrical components of the boiler doing? |

Or a failure of the Low Water Cutout device. They do look tuff, but they can fail, along with many other items. Look at the damper, is there a electrical connection? If so and the damper does not open, you will shut down. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic. |
