This poem was forwarded to me Thursday Feb. 19. I was really surprised when I read it today(been on vacation from work), because in catching up on MOL last night I came across an almost identical story someone posted as having happened to them. Is it possible that the poet plaigerized our MOLer's story or is related in some way? My real question has to do with what seem to be the new ethics of the internet. How can a person know who/when to trust/credit when there seems to be so much borrowing going on? Passing jokes and stories around is one thing, but it almost seems that anything put out there becomes fair game. I understand that HS & coll teachers are having real trouble with students plaigerizing info from the web without thought. What do you think? R Subject: Cookies At an airport one night With several long hours Before her flight. She hunted for a book In an airport shop, Bought a bag of cookies And found a place to drop. She was engrossed in her book But happened to see, That the man sitting beside her, As bold as could be, Grabbed a cookie or two From the bag in between, Which she tried to ignore To avoid a scene. So she munched the cookies And watched the clock, As the gutsy cookie thief Diminished her stock. She was getting more irritated As the minutes ticked by, Thinking, "If I wasn't so nice, I would blacken his eye." With each cookie she took, He took one too, When only one was left, She wondered what he would do. With a smile on his face, And a nervous laugh, He took the last cookie And broke it in half. He offered her half, As he ate the other, She snatched it from him And thought....ooh, brother! This guy had some nerve And he's also rude, Why he didn't even show Any gratitude! She had never known When she been so galled, And sighed with relief When her flight was called. She gathered her belongings And headed to the gate, Refusing to look back At the thieving ingrate. She boarded the plane, And sank in her seat, Then she sought her book, Which was almost complete. As she reached in her baggage, She gasped with surprise, There was her bag of cookies, In front of her eyes. If mine are here, She moaned in despair, The others were his, And he tried to share. Too late to apologize, That she was the rude one, The ingrate, the thief! How many times have we absolutely known that something was a certain way, only to discover later that what we believed to be true....was Self-certainty and self-righteousness leave little room in our heart for other things. "Always Keep An Open Mind And An Open Heart, Because. . . . . . . . . You Just Never Know. . . . "You might be eating someone else's cookies."

I have a feeling that the MOL poster "borrowed" the story from an urban myth. I've heard this story about 2 years ago from my boss' boss who also claimed it happened to him. |

SoOrLady, Majorca was beautifu, quiet, cool. We rented a car and drove from one edge of the island to another, ate wonderful seafood, slept and read all week. If the weather had been better, we would have hiked and bicycled, but still had a great time. R

I just heard this quote from one of the country's top psychology and philosophy lecturers (and I apologize if I don't have it exactly right) If you think you understand someone, stop. Tell yourself you may be wrong. Tell yourself you may be completely wrong. Tell yourself you may be completely, utterly wrong. And you may well be right!

Becky: Welcome back. Glad your tip was such a success. In reading your post, I was reminded how common so many of our unique seeming experiences really are. It's easy to imagine more than one set of people finding themselves in the cookie sharing scenario. |
