Looking for a recommendation for some person/firm who will come and dig up/clean miscellaneous weird bushes, small old stumps etc. Emphatically not looking for a high end landscape artist; rather a firm who will ready our back yard for our own landscaping efforts.

Any idears? Moved in last Spring, and decided to give everything growing a shot at revealing their beauty, etc. Long neglected backyard. Thanks very much!

Cynicalgirl,
I'm looking for the same thing! If you take Valley Street and cross South Orange Avenue go about 3 or 4 miles down the road just before the White Castle on Scotland Road and there must be 50-75 day laborers that wait to do misc. projects like we are doing. I priced landscapers to do a clean out and plantings and estimates came in at $3K. I'm sure you can get these guys at $8-$10 hour. That's what I plan to do this spring.

Dano, surely that's not safe....you would bring a stranger off the street back to your house, to your yard? As a mom of two young girls, I would personally stay away from doing this. You have no idea who these people are, whether or not they have a criminal background, etc. I understand the desire to save money, but are people really doing this? I wouldn't dream of it. Do you even give them a ride to your house in your car?

Call Anthoney's Landscaping -- he did something like this for us without a landscaping contract. I think he's out of South Orange.

My sister had some heavy yard work to do and asked my and a friend to go and pick these guys up. We paid them $10 an hour and they worked for about 5 hours each. They were the nicest people in the world. They even tried to pay us for the two beers we gave them.

Although this sounds scary it's a very common practice around freehold NJ. They're just guys looking to make some extra money. If you get together with a neighbor or two it's easier to supervise the work and it's very cheap.

My neighbor drives down in his minivan to Central Ave in Orange (West Orange?) when he has big yard projects. Apparently many immigrant workers there. WIll do it for $10/hr and lunch.

It does mean, though, that he's hands on working with them to get the job done.

I'd use Ken Secor of Palmer Plumbing. 732 388-1794

We used Oriental Gardener (a Maplewood-based business) for exactly that last year. They did a great job at a reasonable price.

Jackie,
Brett is correct!! These are not criminals. They are just hard working folks trying to make ends meet. True, there have been rare reports of problems, but this is not the norm. It also helps if you speak Spanish.

Cynical - when we moved in we needed the same thing - we used Oriental Gardeners. Not a lot of finesse, but good hard workers - they even pulled out a scary poison ivy patch (4 years later and it hasn't reappeared).

For some reason they planted potatoes for me too, said my lawn reminded him of Viet Nam (really).

I don't have Moui's number (that's the owner) pronounced "Moo-ee", but I'm sure he's in the phone book or the archives.

Good luck!

To all,

I do not know how my post, above, got here. It was for another thread dealing with a plumbing problem.

Sorry, it looks stupid.

Later,
George

I was wondering why anyone would recommend a plumber for heavy yard work . . .
