My wife heard something to that effect from a friend. If it's true, we are SO outta here. Enough is enough.

Oh come on JJ...check out the "maplewood virtues" thread. That'll make you feel better.

Nah - you don't have to worry. Some of the BOE members said that a 9% school tax increase will only cause the older residents to leave.

It's small compared to the increase in premium I'll have to pay for health insurance.

Maybe we should rejoice over this result of Bush's tax policies.

How do you measure the 9%?

Your tax bill will be three parts;
Township
School System
County

Keep your eye on the School part. That alone is most of your tax bill.

Well, Bush isn't raising my property taxes, but he reduced aid to states. His chief economic advisor said plainly, "the states are just complainers."

Local taxes are going up, for a few reasons, one being reduced aid from the federal government.

Of course, there are other causes, and maybe we should discuss them.

Could it be that as JJkatz says above, "enough is enough." Spend less. I don't see why when everyone is asked to do more with less these days governments and other's such as our school district cannot do the same.

Funny how "spend less" never seems to get floated as an option.

I sure hope it doesn't happen. We're barely above water as it is.

If only the same percent of people voted in the BOE elections as the percent of your taxes that goes to them. Ah, but the cliquey little club currently in control wouldn't like the stupid, ignorant masses voting on something they couldn't possibly understand.

Voting at BOE wouldn't help, all of the electable candidates are the same.
Funny how spending less, or cutbacks, actually means just lowering the growth rate. Nothing ever actually gets cut, but if the growth rate is only triple inflation, woe is me. We must have quadruple inflation increases or we are cutting things.
I am looking into Westfield. Better schools, half the taxes and similar housing costs (look on realtor.com if you want to dispute this, its true). Just drive for part of the commute and overall time to lower or mid Manhattan is similar.
There is a point where everyone will break, or at least everyone will move and no one will buy our houses because the taxes are ridiculous. The high school will still be mediocre but at least we will be spending the highest in the nation per student.

"You kids today have it easy. When I was a kid everything was HUGE. My dad was nearly four times bigger than me. You couldn't even see the tops of counters.... Then gradually everything became smaller until it was the manageable size it is today."

How come everyone is upset that their local taxes may go up but only the republicans are upset when Kerry says he will repeal most of the recent federal tax cuts?

Does not make much sense to me.

Lumpynose: Lots of us would love to have more people vote in Board of Education elections. We say so every year here on MOL. It'd be great if there was better coverage in the local paper, but that's not enough.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: There's no "plot" to keep people ignorant. Unfortunately, the average eligible voter manages to stay ignorant without any help from your hypothetical "cliquey little club currently in control".

Every increase in property tax makes me more afraid that it will be difficult to sell our house should the need arise. Anyway, federal tax cuts are based on wealth (or at least likely ability to pay tax in any given year) so to many it seems fair that some of the more recent federal tax cuts be repealed.

Jab---fear not, there are a ton of rich folks with big wads of money from their federal tax cut that will line up to buy your house.

Tax and Spend..how about cut non-essential services to lower the increase.

Nohero- I never said there was a plot. I said that if more people voted the cliquey group in control wouldn't like it because things would change. Kinda like the TC....
