A co-worker just came into my office steamed about something. This lady, we'll call her "Ann" had gone out to lunch with another lady, we'll call her "Susan."

Ann finds a piece of metal in her food. (yeeesh). Needless to say the restaurant people were very nice, brought her another selection and told her "it's on the house." So far, so good.

When the bill came, Susan's total was listed. Ann's had been crossed out. All as expected.

Susan then asked Ann for 50% of the total - to the penny, of course. Ann was pretty surprised, and offered to pay the tip instead. Now Ann is worried that Susan thinks she is cheap. Me, I think Susan is the cheap one.

Are Ann and I out to lunch on this one? What would you do if your dinner guest was offered a free meal after having found something unsavory on her plate? Insist on a 50-50 split, or assume htat since you weren't the one chowing on a piece of tin, you don't get a break in your bill?

I probably would have just paid for me and let her get her free meal. If I was Ann though I would have insisted on paying 50/50 like originally agreed.

Split it 50/50. It’s just like if you had a coupon or something.

I don't think Ann should pay for half of Susan's meal.

Ann was compensated for a problem that existed with her meal. Susan had no problem with her meal, so why should Susan be compensated by Ann? If metal weren't found in Ann's meal, Susan would still pay the same amount, right?

I would offer to pay the tip, like Ann did, but no more.

I don't think that Anne should pay for Susan's lunch, but she should have paid her share of the drinks and part of or the entire tip.

I think Susan should stop throwing pieces of metal in her food at restaurants and Ann should stop covering for her.

I think Ann should stop being such a cry baby and buck up!

personally, I just would pay 1/2 to be cool. Why not? Then my good friend Susie benefits from my piece of metal/free lunch and everyone's happy.

The right thing to do would have been for Ann to offer the 50%. She had planned on spending money for lunch, right? She did receive another meal, which she ate, correct? Of course, if I were Susan, I wouldn't have asked, but I would've suggested leaving the tip.

Whenever I have something taken off the bill because of the kitchen's mistake, I always tip on what would have been the full amount. The point is to compensate me for the inconvenience, not to reduce the wages of the server, who still had to wait on me.

IMHO, they were both wrong. Going out to lunch with coworkers is a bit of a crap shoot. When I go out with people who get weird, I suck it up, pay what it takes to get back to the office & won't go out for lunch with them again.

the bill should be split and they should be happy for having a cheap lunch without any internal injury.
it wasn't as if the gal didn't eat.

50/50. People split the bill in 1/2 even if one person ordered more than the other, so I don't think either of them was having lunch under the assumption that they pay only exactly for what they ordered. It's not that Ann was WRONG, it's just that splitting the bill would have been the DECENT thing to do. I mean....how hard would that have been? I'm guessing Susan won't want to have lunch with Ann any time soon.... The lunch may have been good, but Ann's decision may have left a bad taste in her mouth.

This is fun - I had no idea this would be so entertaining. We spent a good 30 minutes debating the situation at work after "Ann" had returned.

I'm with ML1 - If it was me, I don't think I'd have stayed at the restaurant. Ugh.

Apparently the metal was pointy & sharp, too.

ha ha ha ha!

Gasp.

Chortle.

Now I've regained my composure a little bit -

No, this lady is a SUIT. You have NO IDEA how funny it is to think of her in a circus.

When in doubt, better to err on the side of generosity.
