From March 1 - 31, specially marked collection boxes will be in the elementary schools and in various businesses around Maplewood and South Orange to collect new and gently used books appropriate for K – 5 students. Books may be brought to any of the 6 elementary schools, the South Orange Library, Maplewood Memorial Library and Hilton Branch, Wachovia Bank South Orange, Mail Boxes, Etc., Cait & Abby’s, We Got Movies, Net Nomads, Town Video Maplewood, Goldfinch Books , Tara Deli, Pen & Jen’s in the Maplewood Train Station, St. George’s Church, Prospect Presbyterian Church, St. Andrews and Holy Communion Church, the 71 Valley St. Professional Building and in other locations with notices on their doors. Over a dozen amazing volunteers are working on this project this year. Our goal is to add over 5000 quality books to classroom collections for in-classroom reading and book exchanges. In mid April, all of our district's K-5 teachers will be invited to a special book fair at which they can select books appropriate for their classrooms. No money will be collected -- these books will be our community's gifts to our children. Additionally, this year, any preschool books will go to local home day care providers and to preschools in Irvington. We ask that only high quality preschool books be donated -- no "pre-chewed" books please! Help us reach our goal. Bring your NEW or GENTLY USED books to any of the sites above, or private line me for additional drop off locations. Many thanks, Barbara |

This is a great program and urgently needed. According to research, classrooms with more books make teaching easier and more productive. Teachers need a large supply with a wide range of difficulty. Studies of exemplary teachers (Pressley et al. 2000) found that the classrooms of those teachers had much larger supplies of books than usual. Reading researcher, Richard Allington suggests that every classroom should have at least 500 books, with half being narratives and the other half informational. He states:
. . .In the exemplary first-grade classrooms we studied it was common for children to read 10 or more titles every day (counting rereading of books). Thus, 500 titles do not go as far in first grade as they do in a fifth-grade classroom where children might be expected to read a title a week. But by fifth grade, there is often both a wider range of achievement and a wider array of books than might be included in a first grade collection. (I should also note that many of the exemplary teachers we studied had classroom collections in the 1,500 book titles range.)

While the collection period for this year's book drive is officially over, we can accept books for a few more days. Boxes have been removed from the sites listed above - but if you'd like to donate, simply PL me and I'll let you know where to drop books. I'm hoping to be able to tell you, two weeks from now, that we've distributed 5000 books to district classrooms! (We'll know the exact number after the reverse book fair ends on 4/15.) Many thanks to the kind merchants that hosted collection boxes in their shops and buildings. And thanks to the many wonderful neighbors who filled and filled those boxes! Now on to the fair! |

Sorry, can't tell you we distributed 5,000 books because we distributed 10,579 books! Of that total, 6,152 books were distributed to 90 SOMSD classrooms, libraries and programs; 3,593 will support K- 8 literacy programs run by RIF (Reading is Fundamental); and 834 will support an early literacy program in Irvington. Incredible. So many thank yous are needed -- to the two MOL angels who supplied new books from publishing houses, the many people who supplied books, the merchants who hosted book collection sites, the girl scouts and CHS youth leadership groups that collected books, and the AMAZING volunteers that monitored collection sites, transported books, set up the book fair and made it such a big success! Thank you to all who participated in any way! So now for next year....

Me too! (I think that I'm the reason they had 10,579 instead of 5000.) |
