I've had a pre-melanoma removed. What kind did they tell you - melanoma or carcinoma? The cure and survival rates are amazingly high & depend on the size of the lesion & type of cancer. It metastisizes very, very slowly. PL if you don't want to go into details here. Good luck - you have extremely high odds of being just fine. |

I had 5 pre-melanomas on one hand removed and the growth on my right finger is melanoma and was very deep - biopsy and blood tests not in yet. Concern is that level and spread is not common for someone my age. No more sun... |

I just had a pre-melanomas area removed from my back. I had to go back 3 times before the biopsy came back clear. Good luck! Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic.

What would be a good doctor for a skin cancer screening? I haven't seen a doctor in 14 years, but I've been reconsidering lately. After all, that's what the health insurance is for. thanks.

A friend who had melanoma recommended Dr. Silver at Summit Medical Group. I had a basal cell carcinoma at 25 that I just KNOW came from college days tanning beds (how embarrassing!) |

Dr. Silver is my dermatoid at SMG & I really like him. He does my annual mole checks. Before I knew about him, I used the NYU faculty practice. Dr. Jane Levine is a dermatologic surgeon. She took the bad nevus off of my inner thigh & had to go back in to get it clean after the biopsy came back. I really like her; she only does the surgical procedures, but the skill was amazing & scarring minimal. |

My father had a level 4, he had a large patch of skin removed from the center of his back in 1992. Today he is great, for the first 2 years he went to the doc every month for test and exams, now he is down to once every six months. We all grew up at the beach, and never cared about sunscreen until this happened. Now we wear SPF 30 all the time. Hope you are okay. |

I've had 17 moles removed over the past 10 years and 8 have been pre-melanomas. The doctor who handled my last 2 biopsies is Emily Altman, Northfield Rd., Livingston, 992-0550. I think she has a very good eye. I'd recommend everyone keep a chart of their moles and look at them once a month for any changes in color, shape, size. Check between toes and on the scalp, etc. Ask a partner to look at your back. All this diligence is easier said than done, of course. But we take advantage of our health insurance and even bring the kids once a year for a mole check. Don't put off a visit to the dermatologist if a mole has an irregular color or border or has changed in any way. I thought because 2 of mine were getting lighter instead of darker, they were okay. They weren't. My heart goes out to you, Mem, and I wish you the best. Feel free to private line me if you want. |
