THIS IS NOT A JOKE - I just had news from another MOL poster that he had received a nude photo of me (there is no such thing so it was engineered) FROM MY PRIVATELINE ADDRESS, and I am contacting both the police and my lawyer. Our first move is to inquire here if anyone else has received one and if so please forward the file to me, again via privateline. Please no joke responses as we are involving the police and we don't want to waste their time. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help and sorry if anyone else has received this garbage. I don't think I'll be posting anymore on MOL after this. |

according to Comcast, it could be something like this: "Keep your PC's anti-virus software up-to-date and install a firewall. Unprotected high-speed Internet connections are vulnerable to infection by viruses that are programmed to open gateways, also known as proxies, to relay spam. By not keeping your PC secure, you may unwittingly be a courier for spam." |

I have no photo of me in a networked computer. Someone that has seen me used a photo that looked somewhat like me. Therefore it is not a virus. |

So if I am following this correctly, a message board user got a PL message from you with a the photo? Is that right? If so then someone has access to your pc or your password. In another thread you said you traded your password or have logged in as another user...(something like that) Was that recently, have you changed your password since you let others use it? Can the message board determine the IP address of the PC when a user logs in? If so I would think the police would be able to work with the ISPs to determine where the PC is located. ISPs are slow to provide this info, but due to the nature if this issue they may move faster.

It's not possible to send images through the message board's private line system, so the message originated elsewhere. |

i can't believe the police are going to waste their time trying to track down who sent an email with a picture in it.

if you are going to collect emails, make sure that you view the email showing all headers and copy and paste it into a new email that is to be sent. Also send this to abuse@yourisp,com/net/org along with an explanation of the event. Since this may be a federal offense you should also go to this FBI site and file a complaint, https://www.ifccfbi.gov/cf1.asp just follow the instructions given. Make sure you keep a copy of the email sent to you, along with all headers. |

A citizen's complaint warrants police attention when a law is broken. As far as I can see from the situation as described, no law was broken, unless there was an explicit or implicit textual threat included in the email. But the complainant is usually welcome to file a police report to establish a timeline in case any laws relevant to the situation are either broken in the future or determined retroactively to have been broken. The FBI will not get involved in an incident of this nature. |

it is a federal offense to spoof an email address, and the content of the email could be perceived as a terroristic threat under some of these new laws. It is a federal crime to utilize a computer to commit any crime. It is a federal crime to use or traffic in computer passwords, (such as ISP passwords for email). It is a federal crime to commit illegal activities through an interstate communication (the internet). Unauthorized access into a private email account is a crime, The law provides for a total sentence of 3 years in prison, a fine of $300,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based on the seriousness of the offense and the criminal history, if any, of the defendant. blah-blah-blah apparently, any crime committed where there is the use of a computer, means it can be federally prosecuted. Until the role of the "National Infrastructure Protection Center" (NIPC) is more clearly defined, the FBI is handeling all matters of this nature. |

Mem: Have you actually seen a copy of the e-mail and the attachment? Are you certain that they exist and that they were received as described? |

Thanks for all the well wishes. Apparently the file was deleted, and hopefully it's a one time incident. Since I don't want to waste police time unless it happens again, I just let an old friend of mine who is a detective know about it. I am very relieved that no other MOLers have received this (I pictured all you guys receiving this! yikes!) or that it hasn't happened to anyone else here. It was a rough one last week. |
