Here's a list of outrageous driving behavior in the village which is ruining our quality of life. My worry (and my friend T's worry) is that those who are moving here for "quality of life" are ruining the quality of life!! 1) Continual flagrant disregard for the No left turn into angled parking spots 2) Continual parking in front of Village Trattoria to pick up orders ("oh, I'll just be a second.") 3) Double parking behind the angled-spot parkers! ("oh, I'll just be a second") 4) Driving so slowly down Maplewood Ave to wait for an angled spot, then backing up! when realize that someone is pulling out. 5) Parking in front of bank parking lot exit to run into Trattoria. 6) Speeding into the village down Maplewood Ave 7) Floating through the stop sign coming down Baker 8) Floating through the Stop sign coming up Baker right after overpass. 9) Floating through any stop sign. 10) THere are more, but you get the picture. The people guilty of these infractions usually get irate when you point out that they are in the wrong. Who are these people and why do they do this and why do they live here?!?!?!?!?! Let's start ticketing! THink of the money the town would rake in!!!! |

I dont seem to often agree with you ffof, but RIGHT ON BROTHER . If the town wants to empower me somehow to legally write tickets I would happily do it. Let me at them for a month, and watch two things happen. The town makes some money, and the problem clears up as soon as these jacka$$es realize that they are not, indeed, above the law. "Let's start ticketing! Think of the money the town would rake in!!!!" Truer words have never been spoken. Listen, NYC, the GSP, the NJ Turnpike, as well as many other towns don't worry about raising taxes, or their tolls, they just raise the level of summons their police officers issue. It's about time we did the same, great idea Ffof... |

Lets talk with the Police Chief about getting some of our law abiding citizens who frequent the village deputized to hand out parking and moving violation tickets. We could call them the Baker Street Irregulars. Ffof: What makes you think that Maplewood's new arrivals are solely responsible for this problem? A cousin of mine who lives in Morris Plains told me not so long ago that Maplewood Village has become the in place to see and be seen. Just think of all the parking ticket and moving violation money we could collect from people who don't even live here? |

okay, well change "those who are moving here" to "those who are shopping here." My temptation to say it is newer residents was that in one instance of double parking, the offender came waltzing out of Burgdorff's and had NY plates! Oh I've seen bad behavior from old timers too...but I'd have to start another thread! |

No one has to be "deputized" Any citizen has the right to sign a parking or traffic complaint and have the Court issue a summons. I know of a Tuscan School parent who has taken it upon himself to file parking violations against other parents for violating the "no stopping or standing" rule in front of the school. My sources tell me he has issued dozens of these! |

Anon: Can you tell us the procedure someone has to follow when issuing a parking or traffic complaint? Is there a special form that has to be used? What sort of documentation of the infraction is needed to prove that the incident occurred as reported? |

Joan: Sorry, I went out. Anyway, as I understand, all you have to do is get the license plate number, go to the Municipal Court Office, which is on the second floor of the Police Station and tell one of the clerks that you want to file a complaint against someone for a traffic or parking violation. I think they will actually look up the license plate number and give you a form to fill out, or they might even fill it out for you. The "ticket" then gets mailed to the defendant and you have to go to Court and "prove" your case, which usually means just telling what you saw. Of course, I guess having a photograph or another witness might help. I've never actually done it myself and my job makes it almost impossible for me to do it, but I really hope soemone on here will take this action next time they see someone doing something illegal and then report to all of us as to how it really works. |

It would just be easier to give me a book of tickets and let me loose in the village. I would get writers cramp so fast it would make your head spin. I loathe the sense of entitlement that is seeping into this town and am willing to do whatever I can to make it stop. In any small way. GRRRRRRRRR Alls Well That Ends Well. i've taken pictures of cars parked in handicapped parking spaces and brought them to the police department. they ran the license plate and mailed the offender a ticket. when the person came to court, the judge gave them a hard time, then fined them $100. the only drawback is i had to appear in court too and the person found out who i was. another bad thing is maplewood courtroom is on the second floor of a building without an elevator! |

If you needed one of the handicapped parking spaces, you might have a different attitude to what Duncan and justmefromsouthorange are saying. I wish people would consider others without the need for threats or retributive measures. It would make the town a lot more pleasant (actually the whole state, but that's more than I can take on right now). I can't help but recall all the studies I've read about how stress and living in crowded condiditions erodes the social norms of rat society. Maybe that's what we are seeing in our own little microcosm. |

We all perform real jobs whether we work full time outside the home or stay home and care for children, home, and perhaps run a home based business. The main point here is that some of us have jobs which take us away from town for a significant portion of the day (precluding being in town to witness and report parking and moving violations in the village and elsewhere) and others have work schedules and/or family or volunteer commitments which require our presence on court nights thereby precluding our being available to appear in court and present our case. Persons in either category, myself included, would not be as effective in cracking down on traffic and parking violations as those who spend more time in town and have less pressing evening commitments. |

slightly off topic, but this is what i experienced yesterday morning on the way to shop on route 10. as i progressed past the 3 corner stop sign by the church, a woman in a van behind me began continuously blasting her horn at me. i knew that i did not jump my turn and had no idea why she was blasting (and upsetting) me. We reached the next red light and she pulled up alongside of me, and rolled down her window. I rolled down mine. I asked her (not so pleasantly) what she was so angry about. She started screaming at me, raging that i was a terrible mother. i asked her what the HELL she was talking about and she pointed to my 8 year old, who was in the back. i then noticed that he happened to have wiggled around in his seat belt and was facing her while she was driving behind me. hence, she assumed that his seat belt was not on. she raged on, telling me i could kill him, driving without a seat belt. (this mind you, was all for my son's ears to hear.) i closed my window, had my son tighten up his belt a bit, and spent the next 5 minutes trying to sort out for him what had just happened (of course with a safety lesson imbedded within.) now, folks, could she not have pulled up along side of me and just asked me if i knew that my son's seat belt wasn't secured? i would have then thanked her and calmly explained that although it was, i would be sure to tighten it. oy. what a way to start the day. |

My personal pet peeve is when you, as a pedestrian, are entering or already in a crosswalk, and the drivers don't even slow down, they just keep on coming. It is the law in this state that drivers must come to a STOP for pedestrians in crosswalks, but very few do. This problem exists not just in the village, but everywhere, especially at uncontrolled interestions. I am concerned about this not only as a pedestrian, but also as a driver who generally attempts to stop in these situations, but is worried about being rear-ended by someone behind me who presumes that I'm going to continue on through (or, if we're in the village, someone looking for one of those slanted parking spaces.) My 2 cents. Z |

Gene Z, don't worry about being rear-ended. Just stop for pedestrians. It's the right thing to do, and fear of being rear-ended has the potential to spread the problem of motorists not stopping for pedestrians. Tailgating is one of my pet peeves, and an offshoot of that is fear of being rear-ended. If someone tailgates me and I don't have an opportunity to pull over, I drive erratically, to get the driver's attention. That often scares him and causes him to back off, but not always, of course. Viva, Just as an aside I had a similar thing happen to me...I was parked near the library and was starting my car while holding my baby (one of those VERY cold days. An older woman pulled along side me and yelled that I can't drive with my baby in my lap (baby was about 4 mos old at the time). It took me a couple of minutes to understand what she was saying because she was being so obnoxious. If she had been more polite and concerned I would have explained that in the 5 min it takes to buckle my kids in (the toddler was getting herself into her seat at the time) I like to warm up the car. As it was I told her to mind her own business. I mean, seriously. At her age (older than my mother) her kids rode in a cradle in the front seat. And in terms of parking, Maplewood simply doesn't have enough parking for its awesome businesses! Doesn't give people the right to be obnoxious though. That is reserved for us Millburnites in our Mercedes SUV's. |

Yesterday, as I had 4 bags of groceries in hand and was trying to cross safely, I said to a gal doing this "Did you know that this is a No Standing Zone?" She got all defensive and nasty but I was across the street at that point. |

There needs to be a stop sign on MW ave @ Duran , cars coming into the village on MW ave , come in fast in a attempt to seal off the cars waiting to make a right off Durand into town or a left out of the train parking lot. There is a lot of pedestrian traffic @ that intersection. |

BTW one of the most forged pieces of NJ ID is the disabled driver cards . All you need is a Aunt with one , a piece of cardboard & a good color copier. The state should stick with that being a a wheelchair on your L plate. |

To follow up on what Jet wrote, there is also a sign at that intersection that says yield to pedestrians. The sign is blatantly ignored. I wonder if it is because it can only be read by someone standing no more than 5 feet from it(standing still). Crossing Maplewood ave after getting off the train at night is like a game of frogger. |
