My knives are hopeeless and I am hopeless at sharpening them myself. I think I just make them worse. Does anyone know where to take them to have them sharpened?

There used to be knife sharpener guys who went up and down the streets through the neighborhoods occasionally (with a bell on their vehicle, so you could hear them coming) sort of like ice cream trucks.

Haven't seen one in ages though. Anyone know what happened there?

Take them to any hardware store or lumber yard and they'll send them out. It usually takes a week.

I know there's a guy in Chelsea Market that does it... in case you ever happen to be in the area.

I thought it was a chain but it looks like the closest is the one I go to in Paramus. It’s an awesome store.

This thread reminds me of when my then boyfriend-now husband's grandmother and great-aunt reacted when they found out I had Jewish roots: they proceeded to tell me all about the "Jews" who came around the neighborhood in Brooklyn sharpening knives...as if I might have known them! "Oh, those Jews! They're such nice people. Real good at sharpening the knives!"
Uhm, that's nice. My grandfather worked in the garment industry though!

3 bucks is a great deal, but is it worth going all the way to Paramus or Hartsdale?

If you go on a Sat. the traffic is light and it will only take about 1/2 hour to get to Paramus. It's a great store, well worth the trip. I just don't know what the turn around time is on the knives. Might end up being 2 trips.

I got the name & numbr of the man who drives around sharpening knives. He's great - his van even makes the "clang.....clang.....clang" sound of an old fashioned pot mender.

His name is Visidor DeCarlo owner of "Expert Sharpening" he will sharpen knives, scissors and garden tools. He has an email address of Expertsharpen2@aol.com and phones are 201-836-3287 and mobile 201-757-1023.

I haven't seen him in a year - but spring has sprung and maybe he'll come out of the woodwork. He did say call if you ever wanted him to hit your neighborhood.

BTW: My mother refers to the knife sharpeners as exotic gypsies whose daughters have pierced ears. My mother is only 62!

I have used Juan Portella. He drives a truck and works on your site. Sicissors, Knives, Clipper blades, Nippers and tools.

I have not called him in a year or so, but his number was 732-277-2068.

He did great work and was in the area often.

Later,
George
