THe following actually happened to a friend:

My friend (we'll call her T) is driving down Maplewood Ave and pulls into an angled spot in front of Kings. At the same time a woman (we'll call her S) driving up Mplwd Ave has her blinker on to take a left illegally into the same spot. S yells at T saying "You took my spot." T says "It's illegal to take a left into these spots." S says "Well, I'm six months pregnant." T says nothing and stays in spot. T gets out to go to Kings leaving her teenageer sitting in the front seat. S storms off.

Next thing you know, S walks by T's car (witnessed by the teenager) and S takes her car keys and makes an enormous deep scratch the whole way along the side of T's car. THen she walks into Roman Gourmet.

Teenager reports vandalism to T when she comes out of King's. T is irate. T walks into Roman Gourmet and says to S "You just keyed my car!" S says "you just stole my parking spot." T repeats "You keyed my car!" S says "I don't know what you're talking about, you're crazy."

T calls the police to make a report. IN the meantime, T follows S, who now has her pizza, walking back to car. S says "Your following me?" T says, yes. S says "I'll call the police!" T says, "I have the police on the phone!" S says, "well I can walk home from here." T stops following and is left just SEETHING! Officer tracks down license number but T is not sure what to do.

WOW! That's bad...Didn't we just have a thread dealing with the traffic and parking in and around Kings?

What an example of local road rage with the parking issue here in the Village. Something needs to be done soon before someone Keys someone's face, or worst.

I sure hope "Baby S" was sleeping while all this was going on...

well, the police detective sort of insinuated that once S finds out who T is, S may retaliate, not to mention deny the charge. So that is why T is not sure what to do.

I agree with Curb and Just Me that you need to follow through with pressing charges. Such behavior is unacceptable and illegal. Do not be intimidated by the threat of retaliatory charges. If S thinks nothing of doing this to you, S will be very likely to do this again to someone else.

T, I would have punched her lights out!
We should find S and give her an abortion, and sterilize her too.
This town doesn't need any more like her around! Jeeesh! While we're at it,
we should take her driving priveleges away too!

I had a woman give me a finger while turning onto Prospect Street this week, only to notice she had her kids her breeder van! Talk about Hetero's who shouldn't be allowed to have children!

Given that T had a witness (the teenager), why would she worry? Anything wildly memorable about either car type (other than the key mark) on the one?

I'd sue S's asc from here to China for damages. Take out a restraining order, too.

Being pregnant's no excuse, and if she were that indisposed, she sould get a handicapped sticker/placare and use as needed. What a crock.

Is there some kind of Maplewood merchant's association that could do citizen's arrests on these parking/driving issues?

A few months ago I was behind a woman who wanted to make an illegal left turn into a spot. It was shortly after the kids had gotten out of MMS and the street was full of kids walking across, standing on the curbs, etc. This car blocked traffic two ways while she attempted to work her SUV into the spot.
Being a good citizen, I wrote a note to the driver after I had parked, informing her that she had made an illegal turn. I was shocked when I lifted her windshield washer to tuck the note under - her car alarm went nuts! I never heard anything like it! I ducked into a shop before the woman responded!

Several thousand people competing for the same half dozen or so spaces is bound to cause problems. However, until we all learn how to beam ourselves directly from our front doors into the shop of choice in the village, we are going to have to learn how to share. There is all too much "spoiled brat" behavior being displayed in the village lately. Where is the peer pressure police when you need them?

Ffof:

The situation you describe has escallated far beyond a question of who was legally entitled to the parking space. T's getting her vehicle into the space first should have resolved that question.

Both T and S could use a good course in conflict resolution. T should learn not to provoke someone who was already losing control and S should pay for repairing the damage she caused to T's car.

You think T provoked S? It was S who started with "You stole my spot." T just restated the existing ordinance to her which states that it is illegal to turn left into those spots. S was out of control.

I agree that S was out of control. I just wonder if S grew more out of control when T made the illegal turn comment. I also don't think that T following S into the pizza parlor was the swiftest move in this situation. All T had to do was give S' plate number to the police when she filed her report and avoid a direct conflict herself.

Just out of curiosity; where did S end up parking? How long did it take her to find another space and how far did she have to walk?

I'm just glad I live on the good side of town... I get such a kick out this board because all I hear is how the "east" side of town is so undesireable and yet it seems that all the road rage, car thefts, grafitti, packs of kids intimidating residents in the park near the library and gang member arrests happen near town. Maybe it's time to get a new pair of rose colored glasses

This is not about parking! It is about deliberately vandalizing someone else's property! That is a criminal act. T should walk into the Police Station first thing Monday morning and insist on filing criminal charges! Furthermore she should report the damage to her insurance company seek to have them compensate her for the repairs and subrogate, that is, have T's insurance company go after S for reimbursement!

Anon:

If T makes an insurance claim regarding the scratch damage done to her car, T's insurance rates will likely go up. Not a wise move for a repair which may cost less than the deductable on the policy.

I agree that T should file a formal complaint. S needs to get the message that she is being held responsible for her actions.

However, the key here is finding a solution which will reduce or fully eliminate the number of such future incidents.

Your insurance rates shouldn't go up because of someone else's actions!

I've never understood this. You should never make an insurance claim because then your rates will go up! So what's the purpose of having insurance?
