I was standing in a long line of people at the cashier. I had only three items in my hand when one of the other cashiers waived me over to his line. Just as I was about to step into the lane this woman with an overflowing cart of groceries cut me off and started unloading. She honestly may have not heard the gentleman ask me to come over, but she did see I only had three items in my hands and could have let me go first; it would have just been good manners.

Why not say something? People have a lot on their mind. It could have been an honest mistake.

Check out lines work on the principle of first come, first served. Since this was not an express line, the woman with the overflowing cart had the same right to off load at the register as you did. I don't think the cashier had the right to select one customer and pull them off a long line when others closer to the front of the line had been waiting longer.

What really upsets me at the check out counter is when the person in front of me starts unloading his/her cart and then goes back to pick up more items after the cashier has begun ringing up the sale.

Did this happen on Sunday around 5:00. Cause I was there and I saw this or a similar random act of unkindness.

TomR you are never going to let me live that down are you??

I know she had just as much of a right as I did to get in the line. The cashier saw I only had a couple of items, and said he was open to come on over. The other woman wasn't even in a line, she was coming from the produce section.

It may have been a mistake, but I really don't think so she looked at me. I probably should have said something, but I wasn't in the mood for a confrontation.

At the risk of sounding smug, when I have a cart full of groceries, I always let someone with just a couple (or 3) items go ahead of me.
Empathy never goes out of style.

Mas - me too! Did it the other day at Costco.. I had a cart full and the woman behind me just had a cheesecake - you should have seen the look on her face when I told her to go ahead of me!

I call it tunnel vision. People are just plain rude sometimes. I see it everyday on the train when very pregnant women stand while commuters sit there buried in their newspapers....refusing to look up in case they catch their eye and feel obliged to stand. Glad I got that off my chest, it has been bothering me for ages.

Why not just ask if you can go first? I do it all the time and can't recall anyone saying no.
