Here's what I've done to try to fix it:
1. Reinstalled Office XP
2. Defraged
3. Deleted all my temp files
4. Just installed Norton Antivirus and currently cleaning
5. Installed and ran Spybot
6. Tried System Restore on two prior dates

...not in that order.

Any other suggestions?

Do you have a home network / router?

If so, be sure to shut down the PC, turn off the modem & turn off the router (& then turn them all back on) periodically.

I had a similar problem with XP and I went thru all the same steps as you have to fix it. Nothing seemed to work. I finally went to Microsoft's webpage and started searching thru their forums, which was very helpful. I suggest you go there for. In my case, I downloaded a free accelerator from Intel and now my Pentium 4 is running like new again.

Run the windows task manager, which you can run by hitting ctrl-alt-delete. Click on the Performance tab and see, in the cpu usage history panel, if the cpu (processor) is at the peak. That means something is going on, and it's probably not useful.

cpu meter

As you can see in my meter, something used the cpu for a few seconds but then it quieted down. There's some other noise there, but that's OK. It's a problem if the line is solid along the top of the meter.

You can also see that I have about 220,000 K free, and that's ample.

Also look in the physical memory panel and see how much is available. You'd want at least 64,000 K free. Once you've done that, click on the Processes tab. Click on the CPU and Mem Usage columns twice each to bring the top contenders to the top of the list. First see if you can figure out if one process or another is using the CPU. Then see if one or another is using too much memory.

In this picture, you see that I clicked the Mem Usage column, and opera.exe (which is my web browser) is using up a lot of memory, 87,180 K, which is a lot, but I happen to know it's normal for my usage.

memory usage

This method of investigation can tell you if Word has gone amok, or there might be a virus. That peak in the CPU meter is actually my spyware checker, which peaks like that at regular intervals. Virus scanners can do that, too, and it's a necessary evil.

If you experienced a sudden problem, most likely you got one of the new viruses. Before you run your virus scan its imperative to update your virus definitions. I have removed 4 viruses from family/friend's computers in the last two weeks. My recommendation to them was to set their virus program to automatically update itself atleast 2 times a week and to schedule a scan twice a week (in off peak hours).

Tom,
Why is Opera consuming so much memory? (If that's a screen grab from your computer)

Because Opera makes it really convenient to do stupid things. It remembers all the web pages I was reading, through logouts and reboots. I typically have about Opera windows open, of pages I've half read and have been meaning to finish. I realize I won't get to all of them, but you know how that is.

I've cleaned up my startup menu at msconfig and now I have no paging file. I found out that my CPU usage is 100%. My computer is getting worse. Would anyone like to take a crack at it for money? I'd be happy to pay anyone to bring my baby back to life.

I'm happy to hear it. Like you, I spent many hours trying to figure it out. I really hate computers!
