Where do you do your grocery shopping?

Kings in Maplewood is nice and convenient, and the staff are nice, but the selection is narrow, and the prices are high. We rarely buy much there.

I often go to Whole Foods, which is very good, and the prices are extremely high. We buy most of our produce there. The staff are extremely helpful and courteous. When I ask where something is, the person I ask doesn't tell me which aisle to go to. She takes me there.

I also go to Pathmark in South Orange. The food isn't very good, but it's conveniently located, and it's good for packaged goods. The R&B music they always play is great. Several times, I have entered in a bad mood and walked out in a good mood, solely because of the music. The prices are decent, though the staff are nothing special. Typical of NJ, they avoid eye contact and often neglect to thank me for my business.

My wife likes to go to the Shoprite at Morris Ave and Liberty Ave in Union. It's an interesting compromise between pricey and decent food. And they are the only place that has cans of Starkist Tuna Filet in olive oil.

I find it interesting to compare the clientèle in these places. Kings in Maplewood has the middle to the high income of Maplewood. Whole Foods is incredibly yuppy. Pathmark in SO is decidedly the opposite. I enjoy shopping in both Whole Foods and Pathmark.

Shoprite in Millburn. Kings in a pinch. Whole Foods less recently - although their staff is by far the most helpful.

Pathmark, Costco & Whole Foods (when I want to eat a little heathier for the week). I desperately want a nice produce stand. I know the one by Drug Fair expanded, but the twice I've been in there they haven't carried broccoli rabe, so I get that at either PM or WF, same price at either.

I shop at Kings - usually the one in Maplewood. The produce is fresh, the staff are friendly and helpful and, while the selection leaves something to be desired, they will usually honor a request and place an order if there's someting specific you're looking for. Sometimes I venture over to the Shop Rite in Millburn, but rarely. My time is worth the extra money I spend at Kings. (And Kings carries Bell & Evans chicken and free-range eggs, and hormone free beef)

The A&P is the pits and while I've heard the music at the Pathmark is good, and the food somewhat passable, I haven't shopped there since a colleague's mom was nearly killed during a car-jacking several years ago. The lower prices just aren't worth the safety risk to me.

ShopRite in Millburn on Main. - it's close (if you cut through the back way) and has decent music. You'll also be one of the youngest shoppers in the place.

Kings for produce.

I hate Whole Paycheck - the produce is overated.

And Costco in Union.

I never ever go to Pathmark or A&P

Oh, by the way, we like the other food at Whole Foods, too, but we can't afford to buy everything there. And my kids insist on certain brands, such as Arnold white bread and Chef Boy-Ar-Dee ravioli. But they are coming around and noticing that the good stuff is just as enjoyable and sometimes more so. But you can't push kids too hard in matters of food, because they can rebel.

Kings in Livingston, or in Chatham if I'm at my son's house; Whole Foods in Millburn; Trader Joe's in Florham Park (there's a Kings there, too); Costco for some bulk items like bottled water and paper towels; Pathmark at Livingston Circle, sometimes.

Shoprite in Livingston - they have a really large kosher selection, especially important with Passover just around the corner

Costco in Union - for items we use in quantity

I recently started taking a course at Fairleigh-Dickinson, so I almost always shop at the big Stop 'n Shop on Main Street in Madison on the way home. It's a very nice store but a little far if other business isn't taking you out that way.

Otherwise I go most often to the Millburn Shoprite but occasionally also the Springfield Foodtown or A&P. Less often to the Pathmark, which I really don't like much. I end up at the Maplewood Kings quite often, but only when I need just a few items in a hurry. They just don't seem to have the selection or prices I expect for doing a "full" shopping trip.

Pathmark in Livingston, Shoprite in West Orange once in a while, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and of course, Costco (Rt. 10 or 22. Doesn't matter to me...)

We manage almost everything at Costco and top up from Kings. Every now and again (couple of months perhaps) we go to Pathmark or Shoprite for other staples. The Shoprite in Livingstone is nicest, IMO.

I have lived here for 4 years and still miss the nice, clean, well-stocked supermarkets of the south, with wide aisles and large parking lots. I say the south; I think they are almost everywhere but here!

I lived in Edison, NJ from 1987 to 2003. The supermarkets are huge in that area, too. Wide aisles and giant parking lots. They're not for me. The giant places stupify me and make me dizzy. The merchandise wasn't anything special.

I've been to Food Lion in DE and VA. Unimpressive, to say the least. I trust the south has better than those.

I recently discovered Wegman's in Woodbridge - a bit of a trip down the Garden State Pkwy but well worth every minute.
Kings is great for in and out convenience, if I had pots of cash I would shop at Whole Foods but currently only purchase meat / chicken there.
