Just thinking...As I was speaking with a friend from Millburn, the subject of the Alternative School came up and how Millburn had been contemplating such an option.

Is our school at capacity? If not, would we consider taking tuition kids or perhaps working with Millburn (could defray our costs)? Can anyone think of why or why not such a partnership would/wouldn't work?

Great idea! The kids from Millburn should have no trouble driving their Benzes and Hummers over to Montrose!

I second the motion!

i thought other districts send some of their students to the alternative school.

for what it's worth, i've spoken with some of those kids over the past couple of weeks or so and they aren't as bad as many think. i actually stopped some of them walking down the street to talk with them a few minutes. i found them to be very polite, well spoken and even college bound. one was going to rutgers, one seton hall and another harvard.

Yes, the Alternative School is helping many students who needed more individual attention. However, since it is voluntary -- on pain of lawsuits -- the allegation is that it is no longer doing what it was initially intended to do, which was to get the most disruptive kids out of Columbia while still providing them the state-mandated education. For that reason, I think the Alternative School should have been in the separate proposal this year.

Just an fyi -- there is an Essex county shared alternative school system -- but I believe its only for special ed students.

Would be worth asking if Montrose could be part of that program and take additional students.

The one rub, though, is that Montrose is not considered a school but a program that's part of CHS, so may not qualify.

Pete
